Job SummaryMassachusetts General Hospital is seeking a highly organized Research Operations Coordinator to support the day-to-day research operations of investigators in the Center for Integrated Solutions for Infectious Disease. This role is a strong fit for someone who enjoys making research run well: coordinating people and processes, keeping operational details organized, solving practical problems, and ensuring that follow-up does not get lost.
Working closely with faculty, senior scientists, and an internal operations leader, the coordinator will manage multiple recurring and project-based activities across laboratory operations. The role combines project coordination, documentation, purchasing and inventory support, equipment and vendor follow-up, onboarding, and communication across scientific and institutional teams.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent and an Associate's degree in a related field of study.
- Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree? No
- 3-5 years of project support or administrative experience.
- Ability to prioritize, delegate, and manage multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, including strong presentation skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, including on tight deadlines.
- Basic financial/accounting skills.
- Knowledge of basic business administrative principles and project management best practices.
- Competency in Microsoft applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Knowledge of file management and other administrative procedures.
- Bachelor's degree in biology, microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, or a related scientific discipline.
- Hands‐on laboratory research experience and familiarity with the day-to-day operations of an academic or biomedical research laboratory.
- Experience with laboratory equipment, purchasing, inventory, onboarding, safety, or vendor coordination.
- Strong organizational, communication, follow-through, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and recognize when an issue should be escalated.
- Interest in documentation, process improvement, and appropriate use of approved AI‑enabled productivity tools.
This role may be especially appealing to someone who has enjoyed hands‑on research but is increasingly drawn to the work that makes science possible: anticipating needs, organizing complex details, solving operational problems, keeping people aligned, and building reliable systems around the research. The strongest candidates will combine scientific curiosity with a service‑oriented mindset, careful follow-through, and a willingness to take ownership of the practical details that help a laboratory and its projects run effectively.
