Lighting Studio Design Manager

Full Time Boston, MA, US

3 days ago Requisition

Salary Range: $ To $ Annually

Founded in 1975,  +A Consulting Engineers maintains a total staff of over 500 employees located at our main office in Boston and branch offices in New York City, NY;
Philadelphia, PA;
Vienna, VA (Washington, DC);
Coral Gables (Miami) and Tampa, FL;
Chicago, IL;
St. Louis, MO;
Raleigh and Charlotte, NC;
Charleston, SC;
Houston, TX;
New Haven, CT;
Los Angeles, CA;
Denver, CO; and Toronto.  +A provides state-of-the-art integrated and coordinated mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection consulting engineering, technology systems design, sustainability consulting, lighting design, and building commissioning services.

Borealis Lighting Studio is looking for a Studio Design Manager in our Boston office who is ready to help shape where this studio goes next — someone who wants to build new relationships and push the practice in new directions, not simply step into a seat that's already been defined. This is a design-leadership role: you'll run projects from concept through construction administration, carry the creative voice in the room, and bring genuine design conviction — a point of view, the ability to defend it, and the judgment to know when to evolve it.

We sit at the convergence of lighting design and engineering — working side by side with our  +A engineering team — and we believe that intersection produces the most meaningful work in our field. We practice human-centric design — light that makes people feel comfortable, safe, and inspired in the spaces they inhabit. We design for sustainability, for responsibility to the Earth, and for the people who will occupy these spaces long after we've moved on to the next project.

Much of our work calls for balancing advanced technical systems with real design vision — healthcare, laboratory, and specialized environments like proton and cancer therapy centers, where clinical performance and human comfort must work together. We're not limited to  +A's core markets, though: this studio has the autonomy to pursue landscape, exterior, corporate, hospitality, and museum and art installation lighting work, driven by where our team's own interests take us.

We're hiring for our Boston office. We work together in the office four days a week and remote one day, because proximity sharpens the work and strengthens the team you'd be joining.

What you bring:
  • 8+ years designing architectural lighting, including leading projects and client relationships
  • A distinctive, confident design sensibility — originate a concept from first principles, carry it through every project phase, and sell it persuasively to architects and clients
  • Mentor and direct junior designers, and run your own projects with full autonomy
  • A degree from an accredited program specializing in lighting design, or a degree in a related field (architecture or interior design) backed by strong experience and a compelling body of work
  • Fluency in Revit, AutoCAD, AGI
    32, Photoshop, and In Design
  • LC or CLD certification required
