Teaching Position Summary

Alexander Twilight Academy is currently hiring summer teachers who will be responsible for instructing rising 6th, 7th, 8th and/or 9th graders in Science. Teachers also serve as advisors and lead an elective of their choosing. Previous electives ranged from journalism to game design and coding to basketball, and more.

Teachers will work with the Director of Middle School Programs, the Assistant Director of Middle School Programs, other teachers, and staff to create a welcoming, academically rigorous, and engaging environment for all students in the program.

Dates and Timing:
  • Mandatory Summer Pre-Work
  • Virtual PD Session - Tuesday, June 9th, 6:00-8:30 pm on Zoom
  • Create syllabus, week 1 lesson plans, and unit plan by June 23rd
  • In-Person PD Day - Monday, June 29th, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
  • Summer Program Dates
  • Monday-Friday 7:15 am to 4:00 pm, Tuesday, June 30th to Friday, August 7th
  • Required staff close out days on Monday, August 10th and Tuesday, August 11th

Responsibilities
  • Lead 3-4 classes of approximately 15-20 students daily
  • Lead an elective that meets twice a week
  • Create a unit plan and syllabus/course overview due prior to the start of the Summer Program (date due: June 23rd)
  • Submit weekly lesson plans and materials due each Friday at noon
  • Prepare daily student-centered, discussion-based lesson plans
  • Attend mandatory staff meetings prior to the start of the Summer Leadership Program, and also once weekly during the summer
  • Maintain a gradebook that is shared with the Director of Middle School Programs and the Assistant Director of Middle School Programs
  • Serve as an advisor for 7–10 students, leading advisory lessons and maintaining regular family touchpoints (at least once a week) throughout the summer.
  • Provide thoughtful guidance and support during office hours, addressing student questions and fostering a deeper understanding of the material.
  • Provide instructional coverage for classes in the absence of teachers, as needed.
Qualifications and Experience
  • At least 2 years of teaching experience required (preferred grade level experience: 6th-12th)
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, including classroom management and team-building skills
  • Experience implementing differentiated teaching strategies
  • Spanish or Haitian Creole proficiency is a plus.
