Norman Bird Sanctuary, established in 1949 through the vision of Mabel Norman Cerio, spans over 325 acres of diverse habitats dedicated to the protection and study of birdlife. As a community organization, NBS stays true to its mission of fostering the appreciation and preservation of nature for over sixty years. Located on Aquidneck Island, it serves as a hub for environmental education, research, and conservation efforts.
The sanctuary offers opportunities for nature enthusiasts and the public to learn, engage, and connect with the environment.
Responsible for providing educational programming with a focus on youth ages 11-14, including but not limited to field trips, after school programming, summer and vacation camps, guided walks, and Curiosity Lab engagement. The Naturalist Educator should have experience working with middle school students and a passion for nature. The Naturalist Educator will support the Education team with public programming, curriculum building, and staffing the Curiosity Lab.
RESPONSIBILITIESEducation Programming:
Support planning, delivery, communications and follow-up related to field trips; facilitate educational programs, guide nature walks, support summer and vacation camps, host Curiosity Lab visitors, and support middle school curriculum development and delivery Maintain order and cleanliness of all shared spaces Support the Education Team with all set-up and breakdown tasks, including setting up and maintaining equipment and work spaces Encourage and report feedback from visitors and program attendees Clerical Duties as assigned
- Able to lift 50 pounds
- Able to walk a minimum of two miles on uneven, rocky terrain
- Able to work outside year-round in all types of weather
- Willing and able to pass a nationwide background check
- Must be at least 18 years old by March 1, 2026
- Must be available March 23rd - August 21st, 2026
- Experience working with middle school‑aged students in a professional educational setting
- Knowledge of the natural sciences
- Strong communication skills
- Bachelor’s degree or coursework towards a college degree in education, environmental science, or biology preferred.
Salary is based upon experience and position, paid hourly on a biweekly schedule. This is a nonexempt, at‑will, temporary position.
