What is the College Counselor role?
The College Counselor works closely with students and families to navigate every stage of postsecondary planning, including college, career exploration, financial aid, pre-college opportunities, and enrollment decisions. Through individualized advising, classroom instruction, and collaboration with colleagues, the Counselor helps foster a strong college-and career-going culture and ensures all students are prepared for a range of postsecondary pathways and long-term success.
As a College Counselor at Brooke High School, you will be responsible for:
Student & Family Advising
- Manage a 12th-grade caseload, providing one-on-one support with postsecondary planning, including college applications, financial aid, scholarships, and enrollment.
- Support 9-11th grade college and career readiness programming as directed, including family meetings, in-class presentations, one-on-one advising, and student/family events and workshops.
- Support students with applications for pre-college and career exploration opportunities, including summer enrichment programs and academic pipelines.
- Guide students in exploring multiple postsecondary pathways, including four-year colleges, two-year colleges, workforce programs, and other career-aligned options.
- Hold individualized and group family meetings to keep parents/guardians informed and engaged in postsecondary and career planning processes.
- Track and follow up on student progress to ensure all application, scholarship, and financial aid deadlines are met.
- Send timely reminders and updates to assigned students and families about deadlines, events, and required documents.
- Support the planning and execution of school-wide college and career events, including admissions representative visits, career panels, college fairs, parent nights, campus visits, College Signing Day, College & Career Day, and other exposure opportunities.
- Collaborate with the Director to ensure events are well-organized, student-centered, and aligned with departmental goals.
- Help maintain positive relationships with college admissions representatives, scholarship providers, employers, and community partners.
- Support departmental special projects and initiatives as assigned by the Director, contributing to program improvements and new opportunities for students.
- Collaborate with the Alumni Success Team to ensure a smooth transition from high school to postsecondary coaching, and provide support with alumni programming, events, and initiatives when needed.
- Maintain accurate records of student meetings, postsecondary plans, application submissions, deadlines, and financial aid status in departmental tracking systems.
- Provide timely updates to the Director on student progress, as needed.
- Adhere to internal departmental deadlines and ensure timely submission of materials to external partners (e.g., transcripts, recommendations, reports).
