Vice Principal of Teaching and Learning

Founded in 1957, Catholic Memorial is a Catholic, private school in Boston, Massachusetts, grounded in the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers tradition. It serves approximately 600 young men across grades 7-12 from various communities across Massachusetts. Catholic Memorial continues its commitment to an authentic, holistic formation within the parameters of the Catholic Memorial Mission Statement, and its strategic plan.

Position Description

Reporting directly to the Principal, the Vice Principal of Teaching and Learning serves as the school’s chief instructional leader, responsible for designing, implementing, and sustaining a coherent vision for excellent teaching and learning rooted in Catholic Memorial’s mission and the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers tradition.

This role ensures that curriculum, instruction, assessment, and academic supports are aligned, rigorous, and responsive to the needs of all students. The Vice Principal of Teaching and Learning leads the school’s system of instructional excellence, including professional development, faculty coaching and evaluation, and curriculum design, while cultivating a culture of continuous growth among faculty.

The Vice Principal of Teaching and Learning supervises the Director of College Counseling and the Director of Student Support, ensuring a unified and mission-aligned approach to the academic experience and holistic formation of every boy.

Instructional Leadership
  • Lead and sustain a clear, mission-aligned vision for excellent teaching and learning across grades 7–12, grounded in Catholic Memorial’s Excellent Teaching & Learning Standards and the Edmund Rice charism.
  • Ensure coherence across curriculum, instruction, and assessment, aligning all academic programming to shared standards of rigor, engagement and access, and student formation.
  • Serve as the primary architect and steward of the school’s instructional model (Knight Based Learning) and best practices in boys’ educational, ensuring consistent implementation across departments and all classrooms.
  • Use academic data, classroom observations, and student outcomes to drive continuous improvement in teaching and learning.
Faculty Development, Coaching, and Evaluation
  • Design and implement a comprehensive professional development strategy aligned to school priorities and faculty needs.
  • Oversee and actively participate in faculty observation, coaching and feedback, and evaluation processes, ensuring growth-oriented and standards-aligned coaching.
  • Build the capacity of department chairs and instructional leaders to coach teachers effectively and lead within their departments.
  • Foster a culture of professional reflection, collaboration, and shared accountability for student learning.
Instructional Leadership Team (Department Chairs)
  • Lead and facilitate department chair meetings as the school’s core instructional leadership team.
  • Set a clear agenda focused on curriculum alignment, instructional practice, assessment design, and student outcomes.
  • Develop department chairs as instructional leaders responsible for both program quality and faculty growth.
  • Ensure vertical and horizontal alignment across departments and grade levels.
Academic Systems & Student Support Alignment
  • Supervise the Director of School and College Counseling and Director of Student Support to ensure a cohesive and student-centered academic and student formation experience.
  • Align academic policies, scheduling, grading systems, and reporting structures to support student success and instructional clarity.
  • Ensure that academic support services (e.g., CMARC) are integrated into the broader instructional program and responsive to student needs.
  • Collaborate with school leadership to ensure that all students are appropriately supported and challenged.
Curriculum Leadership
  • Responsible for the development, review, and refinement of curriculum across all departments, ensuring alignment with mission, standards, and student outcome goals.
