Working collaboratively with the Pupil Services Director, the Special Education Coordinator is responsible for oversight of special education services at the secondary level, ensuring the quality and integrity of all aspects of the programs. This is a full-time, twelve-month, salaried position.
- Coach staff in implementing the Massachusetts curriculum frameworks in substantially separate and inclusive settings.
- Work with the Director of Pupil Services on program assessment, program review process, and program development.
- Mentor/Coach faculty in best practices regarding inclusion.
- Help to maintain the integrity of special education programs throughout the district.
- Assist the principals in developing and maintaining an effective special education program consistent with State and Federal guidelines.
- Basic knowledge and consistent use of web-based data systems such as ESPED and ASPEN.
- Assist the principals in the transformation of the school culture into a results-oriented collaborative learning community.
- Support the principals in the collaborative development, implementation, and ongoing refinement of the school’s Plan for Continuous Improvement.
- Ensure implementation of all curriculum, accommodations and modifications as outlined by IEPs.
- Assist the Pupil Services Director in planning and implementing a professional development/growth program for teachers and staff.
- As appropriate, propose special education programming, schedules of classes and extracurricular activities; help schedule courses, students, teachers and paraprofessionals.
- Understanding of Medicaid, EDWIN, EWIS and other data collection systems.
- Assist in coordinating transportation and special education services across the district and in out of district settings.
- Assist in the reporting and monitoring of special education student outcomes and progress.
- Assist principals and Pupil Services Director in chairing IEP meetings in-district as well as out of district; deal with special cases as necessary.
- Train and support teachers in using data to drive supports for students in need.
- Serve with parents, faculty, and student groups, as requested, in advancing educational and related activities and objectives.
- Maintain a variety of files; prepare periodic and special reports as required.
- Identify the special needs of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of school system specialists as required.
- Explain and interpret state and federal regulations regarding special education to teachers, parents, pupils, and the community.
- Assist in the planning and implementation of a systematic method of coaching and continuous improvement of special education programs through the use of learning walks, observations, documentation, and follow-up conferences.
- Conduct teacher evaluations for special education teachers and paraprofessionals utilizing the District’s educator evaluation platform.
- Maintain and model high standards of professionalism.
- Perform related work as required.
