Adjunct Faculty - Education

Job Description:

Emmanuel College invites applications to the Department of Education for an adjunct position to teach History and Social Science Methods Grades PreK-6 on T/TH 4:30-5:45pm Fall 2026. This course is required for Elementary and Early Childhood Education majors

Responsibilities include:

• Preparing for and teaching in person classes twice a week
• Holding student hours
• Preparing and grading assignments, lesson plans, and projects
• Course objectives include:
• Developing a Teaching Philosophy:
  Students will articulate their teaching philosophy in social studies, reflecting on their identities and positionalities while considering the diverse backgrounds of their current and/or future students.
• Interdisciplinary Planning and Design:
  Students will create interdisciplinary unit plans using the inquiry design model to foster higher-order thinking and help children engage with essential questions and develop enduring understandings.
• Social Studies Content Integration:
  Students will design lessons and units that incorporate geography, history, economics, and civics, aligning with the Massachusetts History/Social Science Frameworks and tailored to elementary learners.
• Critical Pedagogies:
  Students will explore strategies to teach social studies as a vehicle for social justice, enabling learners to critically evaluate sources, analyze systemic issues, and develop agency to challenge power imbalances.
• Curricular Literacy:
  Students will examine how to select, adapt, and present content to enhance students' understanding and engagement with social studies concepts.
• Play-Based Learning:
  Students will explore integrating play-based methods into social studies instruction to make content more accessible and engaging for young learners.
• Teaching Diverse Learners:
  Students will design and apply diverse instructional approaches, such as discussions, debates, and cooperative learning, tailored to the varied needs of elementary students.

Requirements:

Candidates should possess expertise in teaching history and social science and working with PreK-Grade 6 learners. A deep understanding and experience with MA curricular frameworks and associated Subject Matter Knowledge, along with experience working with undergraduate students and/or preservice or in-service teachers is also required.

Unless otherwise stated above, this is an on-campus position. This is not a remote or hybrid position as employees are essential in order to provide a fully on-campus, residential college experience for our students and the community.

The posted salary range reflects the good-faith compensation estimate for this position. The actual pay offered will be based on the candidate's skills, qualifications, experience, and internal equity factors. $4,950-$5,500 per course
