Reading & Writing Learning Specialist

Position Summary

The ideal candidate will join a vibrant and inclusive educational community and have a desire and ability to work with a population of students with various needs and backgrounds. This is a part‑time position with no benefits. The role facilitates the development and implementation of academic services in reading and writing across the curriculum. The Learning Specialist works individually or with groups of students to promote academic success and retention, and may train tutors in working with students on reading and writing.

Key Responsibilities and Duties
  • Meet with students individually to assess learning needs in reading and writing across the curriculum and deliver direct services or refer to appropriate resources.
  • Recommend and implement innovative approaches to students’ academic success, lifelong learning, and independent learning.
  • Work with peer tutors to support student learning, including possible training and mentoring of peer tutors.
  • Assist with community and college outreach in support of the Academic Achievement Center’s mission.
  • Determine suitable referrals to other college resources based on student need.
  • Assist in the development of non‑traditional approaches for programming in reading/writing.
  • Assist with creating and delivering curriculum and/or workshops to address student success.
  • Collaborate with other reading/writing specialists and faculty across disciplines to determine student needs and develop response strategies.
  • Assist in grant writing and reporting and in the implementation of grant‑funded initiatives.
  • Perform related duties, as required.
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Rhetoric/Composition, English, ESL, Education, or closely related field.
  • One (1) year of experience and/or training that includes teaching, instructional technology, or program development; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Sensitivity and commitment to the goals of affirmative action.
  • Experience working in a community college or similar environment.
  • Commitment to working with underserved students.
  • Experience in the instruction of reading and writing.
  • Experience working with ESL students and adult learners.
  • Experience with competency‑based, individualized instruction, preferably in a comprehensive learning center or writing center.
  • Basic knowledge of writing center theory and pedagogy.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Teamwork ability.
  • Experience using technology in the teaching of reading and writing, and for scheduling and data tracking.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of a community college.
  • Experience in higher education, preferably at a community college.
Additional Information

Salary: $35.31 per hour

Position Type: MCCC‑Professional Grade 5
