The Community Music Center of Boston, an arts education nonprofit, is seeking a motivated, student‑centered private and group voice and songwriting teacher to begin in Fall 2026. The role will serve current and new students while supporting the organization’s mission to transform lives through equitable, high‑quality music education and arts experience.

The ideal candidate has a strong singer/songwriter background, experience teaching ages 4‑12 in a group setting, and an inclusive, culturally responsive teaching style aligned with CMCB’s three curricular pillars:
Musical Artistry, Social‑Emotional Development, Cultural Inclusion, and Student Pathways.

Compensation is based on a regular part‑time hourly rate, is exempt, and includes paid administrative time and paid professional development opportunities. Start date is Mid‑August 2026 (onboarding), with orientation on September 2‑3 and first teaching date September 9. Schedule is in‑person, varies by student request, 6‑10 hours per week, Tuesday‑Friday 3:00‑7:00 PM, with room for growth.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Group Class Instruction and Management:
    Engage students through teaching fundamentals, technical skills, and incorporate curriculum covering basic music skills, music reading, music and movement, and fundamentals of voice performance.
  • Private Studio Management and Retention:
    Teach students according to curricular guidelines, including melody creation, lyric writing, song structure, and character‑driven songwriting; prepare students for performance events; hold at least one studio recital during the school year; complete attendance in registration software accurately and timely; maintain open communication with parents/caregivers and students via email to support educational progress.
  • Communication and Participation:
    Attend department meetings and the annual all‑faculty meetings as scheduled; participate in department events, competitions, recitals, concerts; facilitate student participation in musical opportunities.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in music performance/education with knowledge in voice performance/pedagogy or equivalent experience.
  • Strong knowledge of music theory, songwriting techniques, and creative processes.
  • Experience teaching or mentoring youth in a classroom, workshop, or community setting.
  • Minimum of 2 years teaching experience, including demonstrated experience teaching ages 4‑12 in a group setting, and knowledge of early childhood voice pedagogies and general classroom management.
  • Ability to adapt to individual needs of a diverse student population and provide constructive feedback.
  • Comfortable working in a culturally diverse environment with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as pedagogical and professional values.
  • Interest in culturally responsive teaching, creative youth development (student voice/agency), social and emotional learning (SEL); regularly reflects on practice, seeks and responds to feedback, and demonstrates self‑awareness and commitment to continuous learning and development.
