By reaching 22 of 23 communities throughout Boston and Chelsea, no other youth‑serving organization engages more young people and families.
The Athletics Assistant assists in the delivery of high‑quality and developmentally appropriate athletics programs, activities, services, and special events.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Assist in the delivery of a variety of athletics programs, activities, and events as directed.
- Assist volunteers and consultants who can offer related instruction, support and guidance to members.
- Assist with the supervision and discipline of members participating in programs and services within the program area as well as throughout the clubhouse as deemed appropriate.
- Assist with the completion of BGCB’s program activity standards as assigned.
- Participate in various evaluation efforts throughout each program year, including the annual member survey.
- Maintain a safe and clean program area.
- Know safety emergency procedures and enforce all rules and protocols to ensure safety of our youth and programs.
- Apply knowledge of youth development principles in assigned club program area.
- Secure and maintain materials, equipment and other resources belonging to program area(s).
- Seek out and participate in professional development opportunities as approved, provided or directed.
- Strong verbal communication skills to effectively communicate with colleagues, families and instruct youth in quality programming, including applying conflict resolution skills and best classroom and group management practices.
- Participate in collaborative programs, events and field trips with staff from different clubhouse groups, staff from other BGCB clubhouses and community organizations as appropriate.
- Other related duties as specified by the Athletics Program Manager, Program Manager or Director of Operations.
- Teaching youth/teens the importance of living an active, healthy lifestyle is a BGCB priority.
- Staff are expected to model healthy behavior while working with our members.
- BGCB values creating child‑friendly environments where youth/teens of all abilities can be successful and participate. Employees must embrace its focus on inclusion of all members, regardless of disability or developmental challenge.
- Building the capacity of staff is central to BGCB; the organization encourages and requires that all staff participate in annual professional development opportunities.
- Every staff member shares the responsibility for ensuring BGCB remains an environment free of sexual, physical, or emotional abuse.
- High school diploma or GED.
- At least 1 year of direct experience providing athletics/fitness or recreation programs for youth.
- Knowledge of trends in fitness, developmental games, and other athletic activities.
- Ability to multi‑task and demonstrate flexibility.
- Knowledge of youth development principles.
- Must be or become current CPR/First Aid certified.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work with youth and families from a variety of backgrounds.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Flexibility to work clubhouse hours – especially as seasons and service needs change.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Experience in coaching.
- MS Office and web competency.
- Bi‑lingual or multilingual.
Travel between sites and to activities as needed.
Start DateJune 15, 2026 (desired start date; position open until filled).
LocationSouth Boston, MA (Edgerley Family South Boston Club).
Salary and BenefitsSalary: $20.60/hr – $22.06/hr, commensurate with experience; along with a great work environment.
