Job DescriptionConservatory Lab Charter School is a K‑1 through grade 8 charter school that empowers children as scholars, artists, and leaders through a rigorous academic and music education. Our “El Sistema‑inspired” music program offers daily instrumental instruction in a wide variety of instruments. We blend project‑based learning, social‑emotional development, and rigorous academics to create a holistic educational experience.
We are seeking a Music Teaching Assistant with strong instrumental skills in violin, viola, or cello—preferred primary instrument cello—to support our students in wind and brass music. The ideal candidate will have excellent classroom management skills, be flexible with changing demands, and possess experience in an urban school setting.
Duties and Responsibilities- Partner with lead teachers to support an optimal learning environment.
- Work as co‑teacher/teaching assistant within the classroom.
- Implement lead teacher lesson plans.
- Provide pedagogical support for large and small group lessons for winds & brass as well as mixed‑instrument ensembles.
- Teach, plan, and implement curriculum in collaboration with grade‑level music teachers.
- Create and implement music‑integrated classroom projects with curriculum developers and teachers.
- Use tracking systems to maintain student progress and intervention lists.
- Supervise student groups as scheduled.
- Support students during transitions.
- Maintain instrument inventory.
- Keep teaching spaces clean and organized.
- Comply with all professional development requirements.
- Attend faculty meetings and scheduled staff events.
- Assist with classroom environment preparation and breakdown.
- Perform administrative duties including arrival/dismissal, lunch, and recess.
- Reflect on feedback to improve instructional support.
- Substitute for classroom teachers during meetings, professional development, or as needed.
- Supervise assigned lunch and recess duties.
- Assist with concerts and performances in and out of school.
- Demonstrate a commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive teaching in lesson planning and instruction.
- Minimum 2 years of college coursework.
- Extensive winds & brass experience, especially in brass.
- Experience working with children.
- Ability to collaborate closely with a professional team.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Strong oral communication skills.
- Flexibility and ability to work in a fast‑paced, highly demanding environment.
- Full‑time, on‑site availability.
- Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Bilingual in Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Cape Verdean Creole.
