Position Title: BPS Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL) Prep Course Instructor for the Early Childhood MTEL Exam (72).
Reports To: Director of Teacher Pipeline Programs & Deputy Chief of Human Resources.
The BPS Teacher Pipeline/MTEL Program seeks an educator to teach, tutor, coach, and advise educators hired on waivers who need support passing the MTEL exam required for the Early Childhood Provisional license. This role focuses on increasing the number of licensed teachers across the district, especially in Moderate Disabilities (PK‑2), by providing MTEL preparation courses.
Position OverviewMTEL instructors are teacher leaders who assist educators in enhancing content knowledge, improving test‑taking skills, and developing strategies for MTEL tests. The primary responsibilities include:
- Teach and coach educators one‑on‑one.
- Provide deep content and pedagogical content knowledge.
- Understand and convey test‑taking strategies for each MTEL.
- Advocate for equity and dismantle barriers for historically marginalized groups.
- 10+ years teaching; professional status in BPS.
- Experience as a teacher or instructional coach in early education settings, foundational reading.
- Prior experience instructing or coaching adult learners.
- Deep knowledge of MTEL exams, especially the test of instruction.
- Demonstrated commitment to equity.
- Strong content knowledge in the subject area of the test instruction.
- Bilingual or biliterate.
- Experience teaching ESL, SLIFE, or other language acquisition classrooms.
- Demonstrated content knowledge in K‑Grade 2 settings.
- Demonstrated success in MTEL prep course instruction.
Instructors will teach a 6‑week MTEL prep course for the Early Childhood MTEL exam:
- Session:
April 13 – May 29, 2026. - Weeks 1‑4:
Class meets Mondays and Wednesdays for 2 hours, 5:30‑7:30 pm. - Weeks 5‑6:
One‑on‑one coaching sessions (one per educator).
Additional responsibilities include:
- Bi‑weekly meetings with MTEL instructors, facilitated by the Director and MTEL case manager.
- Coordinate test‑anxiety or test‑taking strategies workshops.
- Submit a syllabus with diagnostic and post‑tests, assessment evidence, and tailored strategies.
- Maintain accurate records: attendance, assignments, artifacts, case‑management notes.
- Follow up with educators on study plans, registration, attempt, and passing of MTEL.
- Complete at least one one‑on‑one session with each educator on roster.
- Evaluate student skills and readiness for MTEL; communicate progress and next steps.
- Monitor progress, send follow‑up emails, confirm registrations, review scores, and develop action plans as needed.
- Complete close‑out meeting with the Director of Teacher Pipeline.
Stipend Amount: $4,000 total (instruction + coaching).
BTU rate: $59.39/hr for 67 total hours (40 hours for 8 classes and 27 hours for coaching, meetings, and documentation).
