Job DescriptionThe Countway Library seeks a dynamic, collaborative, and talented librarian to lead a team of library staff in support of the education, research, clinical translation, interprofessional education, and population health initiatives of the Longwood Medical Campus. Reporting to the Deputy Director of the Countway Library, the Manager of Research and Instruction manages the operations of the department. The successful candidate plans, coordinates, and promotes the library’s education program and learning resources as well as oversees the operations of reference, mediated searching, and consultation services.
This position is also responsible for developing and implementing strategies to improve curricular integration and support for the Longwood Medical community. The Manager collaborates actively with all units of the library and, through the services of research and instruction, supports students, faculty, and other library users.
- Manages day‑to‑day operations of the Research, Teaching and Learning department.
- Supervises three direct reports, training, evaluating, and promoting the work of research and instruction librarians.
- Directs program and service innovation, development, planning, management, and assessment to develop policies, procedures, and goals meeting user needs.
- Prepares statistical and narrative reports, standardizes job descriptions and workflows, and participates in library and campus committees.
- Coordinates departmental activities with other Countway Library units and Harvard system libraries.
- Provides support to Harvard medical, dental, and public health users in producing high‑quality systematic literature searches for comprehensive reviews and literature‑based research.
- Support includes consulting on research question development, appropriate research design, and database search strategies.
- Provides reference assistance to Harvard‑affiliated investigators in biological sciences, clinical medicine, public health, and health data resources.
- Offers expert guidance on the effective and ethical use of Artificial Intelligence within biomedicine.
- Leads the library's undergraduate medical education curriculum integration, developing strategies to increase services and visibility.
- Works with the T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Dental School to expand population health, oral health information services, and interprofessional education.
- Teaches orientation sessions, course‑integrated instruction, and workshops focused on literature‑based research methods and database searching.
- Collaborates with affiliated hospitals and the Office of Graduate Medical Education to align Countway services with clinical site education for medical students and residents.
- Partners with the Department of Publishing and Data Services and the Center for the History of Medicine to collaborate with Medical, Dental, and Public Health faculty on teaching, grants, manuscripts, and presentations.
- Contributes to library and professional development by participating in campus, university, state, regional, and national meetings, committees, advisory boards, and task forces.
- Develops a full network of contacts within assigned liaison areas and anticipates their information needs.
