Disabilities Counselor/Academic Learning Specialist

Under the general supervision of the Director of Disability Support Services, the Disability Counselor/Academic Learning Specialist serves as a primary resource for students with disabilities, supporting equitable access, academic success, and student retention. Through a student‑centered model, this position engages in the interactive process to determine reasonable accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and related laws, while also providing individualized academic support and coaching.

Within the Disability Support Services, counselors maintain areas of specialized expertise while providing comprehensive support and case management to their assigned students. This position collaborates closely with students, faculty, and campus partners to promote access, inclusion, self‑advocacy, and student success across the college community.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct access interviews, review disability documentation, and determine reasonable accommodations in accordance with federal and state disability laws and institutional policies.
  • Manage a caseload of students, serving as a primary point of contact for students and faculty regarding accommodations, access, and academic support.
  • Engage in the interactive process with students to identify barriers and determine reasonable accommodations that support equitable access.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation related to accommodation requests, determinations, and implementation.
  • Provide individualized academic coaching and support in areas including executive functioning, organization, time management, self‑advocacy, and learning strategies.
  • Develop and facilitate workshops, programming, and initiatives that promote academic success, retention, and student engagement.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and campus partners to address barriers to access and foster inclusive learning environments.
  • Partner with the Assistive Technology Specialist to identify and support the effective use of assistive technologies and accessibility tools.
  • Contribute to departmental assessment activities, data collection, reporting, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Participate in the development and refinement of departmental policies, procedures, and student support practices.
  • Assist with departmental operations during peak periods and perform other duties as assigned by the Director.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Disability Studies, Educational Psychology, Higher Education, Counseling, or a related field.
  • Minimum of three years of professional experience supporting students with disabilities in higher education or a closely related setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the ADA, Section 504, and disability accommodation processes in educational environments.
  • Experience providing academic support, coaching, advising, or learning support services to students with disabilities.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and student‑centered practice.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse students, faculty, and staff.
Preferred Requirements
  • Experience working in disability services within a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge of executive functioning supports, learning strategies, and retention practices for students with disabilities.
  • Experience with assistive technology and digital accessibility.
  • Experience working with community college students and other diverse learner populations.
  • Familiarity with case management systems, data reporting, and program assessment.
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical considerations related to disability accommodations and accessibility.
Additional Information

Salary
: $73,248 - $81,071 (Actual Salary Will Be Commensurate with Education and Experience in Accordance with MCCC/MTA Collective Bargaining Agreement.)
