High School Nature Program Leader

Boston Nature Center is seeking an enthusiastic high school student who is passionate about nature and environmental justice to work within the Willow Tree Youth Leader Program. During the school year, Youth Leaders assist with nature-themed public programs, lead informational tables at local community events, help maintain the nature center trails and property, and more. This position also collaborates with other groups as part of Mass Audubon's Youth Climate and Leadership Program by participating in educational outings and professional development.

During school vacation weeks and in the summer months, this position works as a Camp Counselor at Boston Nature Center's summer camp, teaching nature-based lessons, facilitating activities, and supervising campers. In this position, Youth Leaders work for 8 to 12 hours per week during the school year, typically on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and 40 hours per week during the summer months.

Responsibilities

  • Teach children and community members of all ages about urban nature and climate change
  • Participate in and lead workshops, community festivals, conferences
  • Create and lead nature-inspired public programs
  • Help maintain a positive work environment, including organizing program gear and materials
  • Set up for and clean up after events
  • Convey Mass Audubon's commitment to climate change education, equity, and justice
  • Work alongside the team to develop and manage Climate Action Projects

Qualifications

  • Reside in Boston
  • In 10th grade or higher for the  school year (must be over 15 years of age)
  • Available to work 8-12 hours per week (typically Wednesdays after school hours and Saturdays)
  • Interest in and comfort with working outdoors
  • Interest in teaching children and the general public about nature and climate change
  • Motivated to work collaboratively as part of a team, supporting others' growth in understanding and caring for the environment
  • Celebrate and respect diversity

Compensation, Benefits and Perks

This position's pay range is $16.80-$18.80 per hour; actual salary will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements. This is a year-round position and earns vacation time as well as receives paid holidays.

Work Schedule

This is a year-round position. From September through early June, the schedule is 8-12 hours per week, typically on Wednesday evenings and Saturdays. From mid-June through August, the schedule is 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday.

Other Requirements

Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check and a Motor Vehicle Record (if applicable) is required.
