OVERVIEW Boston University is seeking an International Student Advisor for Admissions within the International Students & Scholars Office. The role supports immigration processing for approximately 6,000 new international undergraduate, graduate, and non-degree students admitted each year. This position focuses on admissions-related immigration advising, document review, SEVIS processing, and communication with university departments and students throughout the processing cycle. The advisor is expected to maintain expertise in F-1 and J-1 regulations while supporting international students through important admissions and immigration procedures.

The position also involves collaboration with admissions offices and other university partners to ensure accurate and timely processing.

Key responsibilities
  • Complete immigration processing for newly admitted international students
  • Maintain expertise in F-1 and J-1 regulations
  • Serve as a Designated School Official and Alternate Responsible Officer in SEVIS
  • Review immigration and financial documents submitted by students
  • Issue immigration documents for admitted students
  • Advise students regarding visa applications and arrival procedures
  • Support SEVIS processing activities
  • Communicate with admissions offices and university departments regarding international student immigration processing
  • Assist undergraduate, graduate, and non-degree students during the admissions and processing stages
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Minimum of 3 years of foreign student or scholar advising experience
  • Knowledge of SEVIS
  • Knowledge of student immigration regulations
  • Experience related to international student advising and processing WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS International students rely on accurate immigration processing and timely guidance to begin their academic programs successfully. This role supports students during a critical transition period by helping them understand visa procedures, documentation requirements, and university processes. Strong coordination between admissions, immigration, and student support functions helps institutions maintain compliance while creating a positive experience for international students.
