Description

The Boston College Theatre Department invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, with the appointment beginning in August 2027. In exceptional cases, appointment at the rank of Associate Professor level may be considered.

We seek an individual to teach in the areas of dramatic literature, theatre history, performance studies and/or directing for the stage; provide academic advising to undergraduates; and direct productions on a regular basis.

The Theatre Department offers a B.A. in Theatre, a Theatre minor, a Dance minor, and an Educational Theatre minor. With seven full-time faculty and a technical theatre staff, the department produces a co-curricular season of five full productions (four faculty/guest-directed, one student-directed/faculty supervised) in two theaters (a 550-seat proscenium and a black box studio). We have a strong commitment to teaching theatre as both a liberal art and a performing art and to advancing inclusion and belonging in what we teach, who we teach, and the theatre we make.

We seek to understand theatre not only as a means of artistic expression and a form of entertainment but as a window into history, a vehicle for social change, and a method of inquiry into all things human.

Qualifications

An MFA in Directing, or a Ph.D. in Theatre Studies, Performance Studies or a relevant allied field with a focus on theatre history or dramatic literature, as well as teaching and directing experience at the college level are required; professional directing experience desired. The course load is a 3/2 with a course release for directing a full production.

The minimum qualifications required include:

  • MFA in Directing or a Ph.D. in Theatre Studies
  • Significant teaching experience at the college/university level
  • Stage directing experience at the college/university level
  • Excellent collaborative and communication skills

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Professional experience in stage directing
  • Expertise in Musical theatre history, World theatre history, Asian, African or Intercultural Theatre

Applicants will be evaluated on their potential to inspire creativity and intellectual curiosity in undergraduates, to invigorate our performance program with excellent productions, and to achieve distinction as an artist-scholar.

The expected 9-month base salary range (paid over 12 months) for this position is $90,000 - $100,000. The actual pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as, but not limited to, candidate qualifications and prior experience, scope of responsibilities, internal equity, and market considerations.
