We are seeking a detail-oriented Space Planner to support the management and optimization of the MBTA’s corporate space portfolio. This role involves assessing current space utilization, forecasting future needs, and developing detailed plans for reconfigurations, moves, and renovations. The Space Planner will combine space planning practices and office design skills with current and future occupancy data to help optimize the MBTA’s corporate space.
- Design optimal floor layouts, work environments, and furniture plans using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) or other space management software.
- Perform continuous space audits and maintain accurate, up-to-date occupancy floor plans across all facilities.
- Conduct regular site visits to assess current space utilization, verify layouts, and understand departmental needs firsthand.
- Develop and implement short-term and long-term space plans and design scenarios that reflect best practices in modern office design.
- Ensure all space planning designs and projects adhere to applicable building codes, safety regulations (e.g., OSHA), and accessibility standards (e.g., ADA).
- Work collaboratively with department heads and the Space Occupancy Analyst to understand space needs based on hiring projections and strategic goals.
- Develop and maintain floor plans within the integrated space management software platform, ensuring occupancy integrity.
- Coordinate departmental moves, reconfigurations, and minor renovation projects, minimizing disruption to operations.
- Serve as a liaison between Facilities, Human Resources, IT, and various departmental leaders to determine specific space needs and project requirements.
- Drive a company or personal vehicle to visit work sites as needed.
- Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in architecture, interior design, or a related field.
- Four (4) years of demonstrated experience in space planning or a similar field.
- Proficient in AutoCAD, Visio, and/or other design software.
- Solid foundation in office design principles and space utilization standards.
- Resourceful and strategic thinker with the ability to resolve conflicting departmental needs and unexpected project challenges.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are required for presenting findings and conducting space audits and site visits effectively.
- Have excellent customer service and conflict resolution skills.
- Strong time-management and organizational skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines in a scheduled and methodical manner.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license without infractions in accordance with MBTA policy
- A High School Diploma or GED with an additional seven (7) years of directly related experience substitutes for the bachelor’s degree requirement.
- An Associate's degree from an accredited institution with an additional three (3) years of directly related experience substitutes for the bachelor’s degree requirement.
- A Master’s degree in a related subject substitutes for two (2) years of general experience.
- A nationally recognized certification or statewide/professional certification in a related field substitutes for one year of experience.
- Project management experience
