Job SummaryThe Civil Engineer will develop engineering plans, designs, specifications, and standards for various engineering projects, and conduct studies, surveys, and cost estimates for these projects within their assigned division. This position oversees individual projects and programs, coordinates with internal departments to integrate operational needs into design, and supports the implementation of facility standards and technologies. The role requires hands‑on project management, design, design review, and field oversight.
Duties & Responsibilities- Develop preliminary engineering designs, specifications, and standards for modifications to the various facilities and systems of the Authority.
- Participate in the development, implementation, and monitoring of comprehensive plans for improvements and make recommendations for improvements.
- Coordinate the planning, scheduling, and implementation of all testing performed for the purpose of improving the reliability of facilities and system components.
- Monitor the reliability of major systems and selected components.
- Conduct site inspections of systems and materials to verify quality and prepare required reports.
- Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor, or co‑worker, in a courteous and professional manner consistent with the Authority’s driven by customer service quality standard.
- Work any and all shifts and/or locations as assigned or directed.
- Respond, directly or through others, and/or report to work for emergencies, extreme weather conditions, or any other abnormal conditions that impair service or the safety of service, twenty‑four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.
- Collaborate with other departments and team members to produce and review projects.
- Establish and maintain sound union/management relations while upholding the rights and interests of management and adhering to collective bargaining agreements.
- Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor, or co‑worker, in a courteous and professional manner.
- Drive a company or personal vehicle to visit work sites and to assist at emergencies, service disruptions, and/or other events as needed.
- Uphold the rights and interests of the Authority while building and maintaining an effective relationship with employees.
- Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.
- A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in civil/structures, architectural engineering, or architecture.
- Four (4) years of engineering or related experience.
- Effective organizational, analytical, time management, and multi‑tasking skills.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Microsoft Office applications, and Database applications.
- Demonstrate ability to communicate and present effectively to a diverse group of stakeholders and customers.
- Possess excellent customer service skills.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license without major infractions in accordance with MBTA policy.
- Demonstrate ability to supervise and work effectively with a diverse workforce.
- A Master’s degree in Engineering or a related subject may substitute for two (2) years of general experience.
- A Massachusetts Professional Engineering (PE) license, a Registered Architect (RA) license, or a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
- A master's degree in engineering, architecture, construction management, or a related field from an accredited institution.
- Seven (7) years of experience in construction engineering administration/observation with a strong knowledge of means and methods.
- Experience with transit facility construction and/or inspection.
