ABOUT US:
Volta Labs is an applications company that is revolutionizing the future of genomics. We are a Boston based, venture-backed biotech startup that makes extracting vital information from biological samples as simple as pressing a button, through our flagship product Callisto. Our product speeds up processing time for scientists and increases accessibility to important genetic information for patients. Sitting at the intersection of science and engineering, we invite you to join us on our journey to shape the future of genomics, where insatiable curiosity is encouraged and every Voltarian makes an impact.
THE TEAM:
You’ll join a team of innovative thinkers who love to experiment, collaborate, and win together. We are passionate about pushing the boundaries of automation, biology, computing, robotics, design, and user experience to benefit our customers and the world.
Volta Labs has launched Callisto, our platform for automated NGS sample prep, and we are now scaling our commercial footprint globally. As our installed base grows across North America and internationally, we are expanding the Field Service Engineering team to support customers, improve system reliability, and close the loop between field learnings and product development. Joining Volta at this stage means playing a direct role in scaling a first-in-class platform while shaping how Field Service integrates with Engineering and Manufacturing as the company grows.
We’re looking for a Boston-based Field Service Engineer to support the North American Callisto fleet, with occasional international travel to Europe, Asia, and Oceania. When not in the field, you will be based at Volta HQ, partnering closely with Manufacturing, Systems Engineering, and Software teams.
This role sits at the intersection of customer execution and system‑level reliability improvement. You will serve as the technical lead during field events while contributing internally to improving instrument robustness, qualification workflows, and service infrastructure.
Day 1 to Year 1- Own customer success and instrument reliability across the North American Callisto fleet
- Lead instrument installations, qualifications (IQ/OQ/PQ), and assist customer training
- Serve as the technical lead during service events, troubleshooting complex electromechanical systems in the field
- Monitor fleet health and drive structured root cause analysis
- Perform preventative maintenance and corrective repairs
- Improve service documentation, OQ/PQ processes, and field playbooks
- Develop tools, scripts, and dashboards to support field execution and fleet visibility
- Contribute to improving instrument test coverage and qualification workflows at HQ
- Feed field learnings directly back into Engineering and Manufacturing
Ramp up on Callisto hardware architecture, electromechanical subsystems, and software workflows. Shadow installations and service visits; assist with preventative maintenance and troubleshooting tasks. Begin contributing to documentation improvements and fleet monitoring processes.
Within 12 months you’llLead independent installations, service events, and root cause investigations across North America. Drive structured reliability improvements based on field data. Contribute tooling, dashboards, and process enhancements that measurably improve fleet uptime and service efficiency.
At 12+ months you’llServe as a regional technical lead for complex service escalations. Influence reliability roadmap priorities through structured field feedback. Establish best practices for qualification workflows, documentation, and field‑to‑engineering feedback loops. Mentor newer FSE hires as the team scales.
Who You Are- Background in Mechanical, Electrical, Systems Engineering, or related field
- Strong hands‑on troubleshooting ability across electromechanical systems
- Experience supporting complex hardware in customer‑facing environments (or strong hands‑on systems background for early‑career candidates)
- Comfortable working in Linux environments and using basic scripting tools
- Clear communicator with strong documentation habits
- Independent, ownership‑driven mindset
