Position: Research Scientist (Atmospheric Science)

Karen Clark & Company seeks a highly motivated physical scientist with experience in the field of atmospheric science to join our growing Model Development Team in our Downtown Boston office. In this position, you will work closely with other scientists and engineers to develop our suite of advanced, atmospheric-peril catastrophe models with an emphasis on severe convective storm hazard models.

Expected Salary Range: $90,000-$100,000

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with scientists and engineers to develop the technical aspects of atmospheric peril hazard and impacts models by applying state-of-the-art data processing and machine learning techniques
  • Collect and analyze large data sets of atmospheric data (e.g., numerical weather prediction, radar, satellite, etc.)
  • Compile related literature and datasets required for model development
  • Conduct model sensitivity and validation tests
  • Provide documentation for technical publications
  • Conduct post disaster field surveys after major events
Qualifications
  • PhD in geophysical science (atmospheric science preferred), physics, applied mathematics, or related field
  • Knowledge and experience in atmospheric processes related to synoptic scale, mesoscale, and convective scale weather systems
  • Knowledge and experience working with remote sensing data
  • Knowledge and experience in advanced probability and statistical methods as well as machine learning
  • Programming experience in a widely used language like Python
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including an eye for professional presentation
  • Ability to travel within the US or internationally with little advance notice
  • Experience with GIS software (e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS, etc.) is a plus
  • Knowledge of C# programming language a plus
  • Experience in catastrophe modeling a plus
