Senior Solar Design Engineer – Utility-Scale PV & BESS (Boston, MA – Local Only) The Role

Join a growing renewable energy team where your designs actually get built. This Senior Solar Design Engineer role is focused on 1MW+ PV and BESS projects, giving you ownership from early design through construction and long-term performance. You’ll be the subject-matter expert for solar and storage design, working closely with development, engineering, and construction to produce high‑quality layouts, details, and documentation that meet industry standards and optimize production.

What

you’ll do
  • Lead design and drafting for utility‑scale solar PV and BESS projects (1MW+), from concept through IFC packages.
  • Develop and refine site layouts, single‑line diagrams, and construction details that align with codes, standards, and client requirements.
  • Integrate energy production optimization strategies using industry tools (PVsyst, Helioscope, PVCase, etc.).
  • Review and interpret electrical, civil, and structural plans, ensuring designs are coordinated and buildable.
  • Support construction teams with clarifications, redlines, and design adjustments during execution.
  • Act as the go‑to technical resource for solar PV design within the engineering team.
What you need
  • 3+ years of drafting/design experience in solar PV or renewables, ideally with utility‑scale or large C&I projects.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or a 2‑year AAS in CAD/Drafting with additional relevant experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of solar PV design principles, layout constraints, shading, and equipment selection.
  • Strong understanding of electrical plans, diagrams, and terminology (experience with MV/HV or substations is a plus).
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D for site plans, grading, and civil coordination.
  • Hands‑on experience with production estimation tools such as PVsyst, Helioscope, PVCase, or similar.
  • Detail‑oriented mindset with strong problem‑solving and critical‑thinking skills.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills for internal teams and external partners.
Nice to have
  • NABCEP certification (PV Installation Professional, PV Design Specialist, or similar).
  • Familiarity with civil and grading design for solar sites.
  • Construction management exposure or field experience supporting EPC teams.
  • This role is based in the Boston, MA area.
  • We are specifically targeting candidates who are already local to, or willing to relocate to, Greater Boston.
  • Work authorization:
At this time, we are only able to consider applicants who are U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents (Green Card holders). No sponsorship is available for this position.
