Position: Lead Applications Engineer - SMR Power Island Mechanical Systems

Job Description Summary

The Lead Applications Engineer for Power Island Mechanical Systems will be part of a multi-discipline applications engineering technical team of dedicated engineers responsible for the deployment of GVH SMR plant technology (e.g. BWRX-300 Standard Plant) across multiple US and international sites, including comprehensive engineering input to the development of new plant proposals, early works agreements and new product offerings.

In this position, you will gain and maintain a strong understanding of power island mechanical systems design basis of our standard plant design, along with the underlying plant and system-level requirements, and use that understanding to perform detailed gap analysis on prospective customer site requirements (e.g., codes, standards, regulations, grid requirements, etc.). In addition to gap analysis, you will play a critical role in developing conceptual and preliminary design solutions for the gaps identified.

Leveraging your subject matter expertise in mechanical systems design, you will support the development of detailed statements of work for current and subsequent project phases, proposal technical write-ups, engineering estimates, schedule development and risk assessments in support of site selection, site permitting, and construction/operation licensing milestones.

Job Description

As a Lead Applications Engineer, you will:

  • Develop and maintain a deep technical knowledge of the design basis for standard plant mechanical systems of the BWRX-300 technology (e.g., steam systems, condensate and feedwater systems, cooling water systems, HVAC, fire protection systems, radwaste systems, pneumatics, etc).

  • Support gap analysis between standard plant mechanical systems and site-specific requirements, including regulatory requirements and industry recognized mechanical codes and standards.

  • Evaluate impacts of site-specific requirements on both mechanical systems and their system and building interfaces.

  • Support integration across multiple engineering disciplines, including architectural engineering, licensing, equipment design, and safety systems.

  • Participate in design evolution programs that extend and improve our modularization strategies.

  • Contribute to an engineering team that assures proposals and early works packages for selected sites are compatible with our standard product offering.

  • Establish and maintain strong working relationship with internal engineering teams.

  • Interface with external partners, customers, and other applicable country specific regulatory agencies as required on technical issues.

  • Work with proposal and early works teams to build estimates, schedules, and identify risks associated with different opportunities.

  • Provide guidance to external partner engineering resources to ensure the quality of deliverables.

  • Support commercial and marketing opportunities to develop new business opportunities.

  • Protect the Intellectual Property rights of GEVH.

  • Support GEVH initiatives, corrective action, process improvement and simplification.

  • Ensure adherence to GEVH’s standards for nuclear safety and compliance.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related field.

  • At least 4 years of relevant experience in mechanical systems engineering for power generation, nuclear, or other large-scale, regulated infrastructure industries.

Eligibility Requirements
  • The preferred work location for this role is at the GEH Headquarters Wilmington, NC but highly qualified remote candidates will be considered.

  • This role may require access to U.S. export-controlled information. If applicable, final offers will be contingent on ability to obtain authorization for access to U.S. export-controlled information from the U.S. Government.

Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of nuclear mechanical systems design principles, including safety classification, functional requirements, and performance criteria.

  • Familiarity with nuclear mechanical codes and standards such as ASME, ANSI/ANS, ASTM, ISO 9001, etc.

  • Knowledge of diverse regulatory schemes (e.g., US NRC, CNSC, IAEA, etc.)

  • Familiarity with modular solutions and associated interface requirements.

  • Ability to be…
