Traffic Engineer

Job Overview

HDR New England Transportation Group is seeking a Traffic Engineer to work on various transportation and safety design projects throughout New England and be based in our Boston Office.

The Traffic Engineer's primary duties include producing intersection layout and complete streets practices, pavement marking and signing, maintenance of traffic plans, traffic signal design plans and specifications, Traffic Impact Studies and design study reports, and safety analyses for transportation projects throughout New England.

• Perform traffic engineering analysis and design including traffic modeling, traffic signal design, traffic safety analyses, signing and striping design, safety planning for strategic highway safety plans.
• Assist with the preparation of traffic signal design plans, signing and striping plans, maintenance of traffic plans, and PS&E packages, and work with the roadway design team to evaluate traffic systems and recommend solutions.
• Perform crash analysis and safety studies as part of more extensive transportation assessments.
• Conduct operational traffic analysis using modeling tools such as highway capacity software and microsimulation models, and apply results to engineering practice for intersections, roundabouts, urban arterials, and freeway segments.
• Write traffic impact and transportation assessment reports and present findings to the team.
• Perform detailed checks and quality control reviews of design work performed by other team members.
• Act as traffic engineering task leader, coordinating with other disciplines.
• Perform other duties as needed.

• Professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered (e.g., PE or P.Eng).
• Experience with traffic analysis and traffic engineering/design.
• Hands‑on experience conducting traffic design using CAD platforms including Micro Station, AutoCAD, and Guide Sign software.
• Hands‑on experience conducting operational analysis using tools such as HCS, Synchro, Vissim, and Aimsun.
• Hands‑on experience conducting safety analysis using safety software tools such as Highway Safety Software.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel, Word.

• Experience in adaptive signalization, transit signal design, and ITS.
• Knowledge and experience with New England transportation agencies, Complete Streets, NACTO, FHWA, and AASHTO policies and procedures.
• Experience in design of traffic control tactics, systems management, communications, ITS systems and sequencing plans.
• Experience using PTV Vissim, Guide Sign, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office.
• Local candidate preference.
• PTOE Certification.
• RSP Certification.
