Position Summary
Incumbents conduct inspections of Massachusetts bridges and structures per National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and MassDOT policies. They also inspect ancillary highway structures and perform related engineering duties as needed. The primary purpose is ensuring bridges and structures are safe for public use.
Duties and Responsibilities- Act as a Bridge Inspection Team Member assisting the Team Leader with inspections.
- Inspect bridges, tunnels, and ancillary structures in accordance with NBIS and department procedures.
- Conduct all field work safely and in conformance with MassDOT traffic protection standards.
- Perform calculations for structural section loss, traffic counts using calculators, computers, and instruments.
- Collect and compile bridge data, review plans and reports to prepare for inspections, and operate inspection equipment.
- Assist in preparing various inspection reports.
This position is eligible for a $5,000 signing bonus for new employees, paid in two parts: $3,000 in the first paycheck (less taxes) and $2,000 after probation completion.

Qualifications- Minimum entrance requirement: at least two (2) years of full‑time or equivalent part‑time technical or professional experience in civil engineering related to bridge inspection, construction, survey, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural, sanitary, drafting, environmental, highway, architectural, airport, soils, or materials. An equivalent combination of experience and educational substitutions may apply.
- Education substitutions: an associate’s degree in civil engineering or civil engineering technology may substitute up to one (1) year; a bachelor’s degree or higher in the same fields may substitute up to two (2) years.
Must successfully complete all federal and state training required to meet NBIS regulations and safety standards. A current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator’s license is required for certain assignments.
