Position: Bridge Engineer 5

Bridge Engineer 5

To support our continued growth in New England, CDM Smith is seeking an experienced Bridge Engineer to join our well‑established and expanding bridge design practice in the Boston area. This role is ideal for a technically strong engineer who wants to lead meaningful work, influence project outcomes, and help shape the future of bridge design across Massachusetts and the Northeast.

In this position, you will provide technical leadership on a wide range of bridge projects—from routine rehabilitation to complex, signature structures—serving MassDOT, MBTA, Massport, and other major transportation owners. You will be involved throughout the full project lifecycle, from planning and scoping through PS&E development and construction engineering services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a key technical contributor and task lead on bridge design projects throughout Massachusetts and New England.
  • Lead and participate in all phases of bridge design, including scoping, alternatives analysis, and PS&E development.
  • Design a variety of bridge types, including steel, concrete, prestressed, and post‑tensioned structures.
  • Perform design of associated structures such as retaining walls, foundations, and gantries.
  • Conduct bridge load ratings and support inspection and rehabilitation efforts.
  • Participate in bridge and culvert inspections.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers.
  • Contribute to the growth of the Massachusetts and New England bridge practice through strong leadership and the delivery of high‑quality, constructible designs.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Architectural or Structural Engineering or related discipline.
  • Professional engineering (PE) license.
  • 7 years of related experience.
  • Domestic and/or international travel may be required; frequency contingent on project demands.
  • Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PE license in Massachusetts; reciprocity with CT and NH a plus.
  • Massachusetts Structural Engineer (SE) licensure.
  • 7+ years of MassDOT bridge design experience.
  • Experience with NHDOT, CTDOT, RIDOT, Massport, and/or MBTA projects.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Micro Station, and/or Open Bridge.
  • Working knowledge of structural analysis and modeling software such as STAAD, CSI Bridge, MIDAS, AASHTOWare, or LARSA 4D.
  • Experience with movable bridges and/or tunnel design or analysis.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
