Job Overview
The Senior Consultant collaborates with Managers and other Ryan senior staff to consult with historic building owners, architects, engineers, and contractors, as well as federal, state, and local regulators to facilitate obtaining Historic Preservation Certification.
Open to a candidate in New England, with a preference for Boston or Providence, as we need this individual to go into a Ryan office 2–3 days/week.
Responsibilities- Consult on historic preservation certification processes.
- Advise on availability of federal and other jurisdictional tax credits.
- Provide technical preservation expertise to building owners.
- Work independently with contractors, owners, and regulators.
- Document and advise at all levels of the process, creating a client‑facing partnership with key regulators.
- Work with project design teams to approve work necessary to meet preservation standards.
- Oversee completion of regulatory filings and amendments as required.
- Consultative and persuasive with extensive knowledge of historic preservation process.
- Read and comprehend architectural plans related to the preservation process.
- Review compliance with state and federal regulations to ensure projects meet SOI Standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Minimum bachelor’s degree with strong writing and research capabilities (history, architectural history, historical preservation or equivalent preferred).
- Minimum two–three years of experience with historic tax credit application projects.
- Experience in comparable federal, state, or local preservation programs preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and write persuasive technical arguments.
- Strong organizational skills and initiative in a fast‑paced, time‑sensitive environment.
- Keen attention to detail.
- Ability to conduct research online and in archives.
- Multi‑task and work independently on deadline‑driven projects.
- Technical proficiency in Creative Cloud suite (especially InDesign) to lay‑up photos, create maps, and photo keys.
- Valid driver’s license required.
Supervision of Consultants; may lead a project team.
Work EnvironmentStandard indoor working environment; occasional long periods sitting at computer; exposure to dust, dirt, shavings; independent travel requirement 20–30%.
CompensationBase salary range:
Massachusetts based role $66,000–$86,900; other Massachusetts roles $64,000–$83,600.
