Position Summary
The Assistant Bridge Preservation Designer (Civil Engineer II) works in the Bridge Preservation Unit, providing technical review and project design for bridge preservation projects. This unit develops standards, performs in‑house designs, and assists districts with contract preparation.
Responsibilities- Prepare structural design calculations for bridge repairs such as deck replacements and beam end repairs in accordance with AASHTO specifications and MassDOT standards.
- Prepare repair plans, details, and construction material quantity calculations, and contribute to bridge project cost estimates.
- Check shop drawings and construction procedures to ensure compliance with design intent.
- Review preservation projects of normal and moderate complexity for technical correctness and coordination of specifications, estimates, and work to be completed.
- Assist in preparing project submissions for advertisement and in project award processes.
- Knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices, including soil mechanics, concrete and asphalt properties, surveying, and construction materials.
- Understanding of engineering calculations for volumes, areas, and civil engineering problems, and proficiency in elementary algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and calculus.
- Ability to analyze data, draw conclusions, and make recommendations.
- Familiarity with laws, regulations, specifications, and guidelines governing highway, bridge, and building construction.
- Knowledge of bridge preservation project scoping, AASHTO Guide to Bridge Preservation Actions, and FHWA Bridge Preservation Guide.
- Experience designing and reviewing bridge preservation projects, including in‑kind repairs and resurfacing.
- Awareness of MassDOT CAD standards and working knowledge of AutoCAD.
Annual salary range: $84,427.44 – $.
Eligible for a $5,000 signing bonus for newly hired MassDOT employees. The bonus is paid in two parts: $3,000 (less applicable taxes) in the first paycheck, and $2,000 (less applicable taxes) after successful completion of the probationary period.
