Xtal Pi is seeking a highly motivated Automation Engineer to join our automation team in Boston. This role focuses on robotics system integration, deployment, troubleshooting, and operational support for advanced laboratory automation platforms used in pharmaceutical R&D environments.

The ideal candidate is hands‑on, adaptable, and comfortable working across software, robotics, electrical/control systems, and laboratory hardware. This position requires strong problem‑solving ability and the capability to diagnose and resolve real‑world system issues in fast‑paced deployment environments.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and support automation solutions for laboratory instrumentation, robotics systems, and sample handling workflows.
  • Perform system integration, on‑site deployment, commissioning, debugging, and troubleshooting for robotics and laboratory automation platforms.
  • Configure and troubleshoot industrial devices, sensors, actuators, robotics systems, power distribution components, and communication interfaces.
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical, control, communication, hardware integration, and software issues in real‑world deployment environments.
  • Conduct electrical and controls integration activities including device bring‑up, IO validation, signal verification, motion device integration, and field wiring troubleshooting.
  • Support automation system integration activities with consideration for laboratory safety, electrical safety, equipment protection, and applicable industrial safety and control standards.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams and external partners to improve system reliability, stability, and operational efficiency.
  • Maintain technical documentation, SOPs, and automation system configurations.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 0–3 years of relevant industry experience in robotics, automation, system integration, or related fields.
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols such as TCP/IP, Modbus, RS‑232/485, CAN, CANopen, or EtherCAT.
  • Hands‑on experience with robotics systems, industrial automation equipment, sensors, actuators, electrical/control systems, or industrial power distribution.
  • Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills across software, electrical, control, and hardware systems.
  • Familiarity with electrical schematics, system wiring, IO devices, relays, circuit protection, or industrial control panels.
  • Familiarity with industrial automation standards and safety‑oriented system integration practices is a plus.
  • Comfortable working in hands‑on deployment and laboratory environments, including occasional on‑site support or travel.
  • Strong learning ability, ownership mindset, and ability to adapt quickly in fast‑paced engineering environments.
  • Prior experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or laboratory automation environments is preferred but not required.
