Sr Electronic Lab Technician

Job Summary

The Sr. Electronic Lab Technician provides comprehensive technical and operational support for teaching, research, and student project activities within the Department of Chemical Engineering. Responsibilities include design, fabrication, equipment maintenance, and laboratory operations to ensure efficient, safe, and reliable infrastructure.

• Knowledge of mechanical/electrical testing equipment and ability to fabricate samples for testing.
• Experience in lab safety, equipment procurement, and coordination with the Department Safety Officer, purchasing, and facilities.
• Proficiency in programming (Arduino, Raspberry PI), circuit design, and sensor selection.
• 5–8 years of vocational/technical training or equivalent experience.
• Strong mechanical and fabrication skills.
• Proficiency with 3D printing and CAD (Solid Works and/or AutoCAD), data acquisition systems, MATLAB, and MS Office.

• Lab Maintenance & Operations
  • Maintain, replace, or install teaching and research lab equipment and analytical instruments.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting.
  • Provide safety oversight for electronic and mechanical projects and manage data acquisition systems.
  • Diagnose, disassemble, and repair equipment; locate replacement parts; submit work orders for facility repairs.
  • Maintain inventory tracking, stock management, and equipment maintenance logs.
• Fabrication & Programming Operations
  • Use 3D printing and hand tools to support lab operations.
  • Create CAD drawings (AutoCAD/ Solid Works) for parts, fixtures, and assemblies.
• Student Supervision, Technical Consultation, Training & Mentoring
  • Consult and mentor students on design, construction, testing, and troubleshooting of electronic and mechanical assemblies.
  • Provide safety oversight and technical guidance for student projects.
  • Train and supervise students in safe 3D printer and instrument operations.
• Procurement Support
  • Source external vendors for equipment; order shop supplies, tooling, materials, and consumables.
  • Coordinate acquisition of new equipment—obtain quotes, advise on technical specifications, and support purchasing decisions.

Work performed in laboratory and classroom environments; may require lifting, moving, and installing equipment and materials. Work is required on campus, Monday through Friday.

Pay Type:

108H, Salary Range: $29.00–$40.96 per hour. Starting salary depends on education, experience, location, and skill set.
