Position: Lead Engineer, Distribution Engineering (Hybrid Schedule)

We have two exciting full‑time opportunities to join our Distribution Engineering Team as Lead Engineers. The Distribution Engineering group is responsible for the strategic development, expansion, planning, design, maintenance and operation of the system and its equipment to provide reliable service to customers. Technical solutions and modernization initiatives are improving operations and enabling the integration of renewable energy resources. The group also works to prevent, evaluate and provide appropriate resolutions to system failures.

Job Summary

The Lead Engineer is responsible for the development, expansion, planning, design, maintenance and operation of the distribution system and its equipment to meet the mission and objectives of the organization. The role coordinates the evaluation of system failures and their appropriate resolutions, supports operations during unplanned maintenance, and ensures that the distribution systems are designed to high‑quality standards that provide customers with safe, reliable, competitively priced and environmentally sound electric service.

The Lead Engineer shares accountability with peers for the strategy, development and design of the organization’s Life Cycle Plan and supervises, assigns, prioritizes and directs the work performed by other Engineers and staff.

Essential Functions
  • Supervises, coaches, and develops engineers; approves time and reviews work for quality.
  • Assigns, prioritizes and directs work performed by at least 2 full‑time engineers or 1 engineer and 1 designer.
  • Oversees all types of distribution systems within the local territory (Overhead Radial, Underground Radial, Underground Network).
  • Responsible for the cost and performance of certain assets (reliability analysis, trending of system events, monitoring of equipment condition).
  • Develops, justifies and approves Life Cycle Plan activities over a multi‑year horizon and for ongoing projects.
  • Ensures that the design and specification of additions, modifications and replacements to the transmission and distribution systems, and the preparation of system electrical permits and related customer notifications, are completed accurately and on time.
  • Develops preliminary engineering designs and the details, as necessary.
  • Collaborates with other Engineers within Engineering to ensure consistency and teamwork.
  • Provides technical support and direction to operating areas relative to system priorities, engineering guidelines and operating decisions during normal and emergency situations.
  • Accountable for root‑cause analysis, development and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Evaluates and selects technology and equipment for the system.
  • Develops standards and procedures for design, operation and maintenance.
  • Assumes the role of the Manager as required.
  • Assists with storm duty and any other major events.
Technical Knowledge, Skill, Education, Licenses & Certifications
  • Knowledge of utility power systems is preferred.
  • Ability to independently develop, present and execute new projects through collaboration with other departments.
  • Familiarity with power‑related software is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required.
  • Minimum of eight (8) to ten (10) years in the technical, operational or engineering aspects of the electrical utility industry.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • No licenses or certifications required.
Working Conditions

The Lead Engineer must be available for emergency restoration assignments as required and to travel between MA, CT and NH. A valid driver’s license is required. The position may require occasional to significant travel by car.
