Position SummaryThe functional title for this position is Associate Bridge Designer. Incumbents of this position prepare and/or review Preliminary Structures Reports, Bridge Type Selection Worksheets, Sketch Plans, final design calculations, final bridge design plans, Special Provisions, and Estimates for bridges of substantial complexity. Incumbents also manage bridge portion of projects assigned to them, perform QA reviews of designs prepared by engineers of lower grade, review shop drawings and construction procedures and RFI’s.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesPrepares and/or reviews Preliminary Structures Reports and Bridge Type Selection Worksheets for bridges of substantial complexity in accordance with MassDOT standards.
Prepares and/or reviews Sketch Plans for bridges of substantial complexity in accordance with MassDOT standards.
Prepares and/or reviews structural design calculations, final bridge design plans, Special Provisions, and Estimates for bridges of substantial complexity in accordance with AASHTO specifications and MassDOT standards.
Performs the quality assurance review of bridge projects whose design the incumbent oversees including verifying the completeness of the PS&E packages
Manages the bridge component of bridge projects assigned to them including maintaining project schedule, and interacting with other MassDOT Units and Districts as necessary to complete their design.
Oversees the checking of shop drawings, construction procedures, and RFI’s for bridge projects of substantial complexity designed by the Bridge Design Unit.
Resolves and/or oversees the resolution of construction issues arising on bridge projects of substantial complexity designed by the Bridge Design Unit.
Provides training, guidance and mentoring to engineers of lower grades in the practice of bridge design and the use of AASHTO specifications and MassDOT standards.
Reviews the performance of subordinates in immediate reporting relationships by adhering to the guidelines of the Employee Performance Review system (EPRS) in order to ensure increased communications and successful implementation of the system.
This position is eligible for a five-thousand dollar ($5,000) signing bonus (“Signing Bonus”) if you are newly hired rent MassDOT employees are not eligible for the Signing Bonus. The Signing Bonus will be paid in two parts:
1) $3,000 (less applicable taxes) included in the employee's first paycheck.
2) $2,000 (less applicable taxes) after the successful completion of the employee’s probationary period.

QualificationsApplicants must have at least (A) six years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in civil engineering work in such areas as construction, survey, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural, sanitary, drafting, environmental, highway, architectural, airport, soils and materials, of which (B) at least four years must have been in a professional capacity, and (C) of which at least two years must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (D) any equivalent combination of the required experience, and the substitutions below.
