Applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Steven Winter Associates (SWA) does not sponsor employment-based visas (e.g., H-1B, OPT, etc.) for this position, now or in the future.

Why Steven Winter Associates? At SWA, you're not just joining a company, you're joining an employee-owned team committed to making buildings healthier, more sustainable, and lower-carbon.

  • Be part of a collaborative, and supportive environment where your ideas matter.
  • Work on real projects, seeing the impact of your work in the field and in communities.
  • Learn from experienced building science professionals.

Why This Role Matters: SWA is expanding its commissioning and energy services in Massachusetts. We are seeking a senior technical leader who can independently represent SWA with clients, lead new construction commissioning work, and help shape and grow our Boston-area practice. This is not solely a project management role: the successful candidate will combine deep building-systems expertise with clear communication, sound judgment, and the initiative to turn opportunities into well-defined, successfully delivered projects.

The proposed annual salary range for this position is $110,000 - $150,000 based on a 40-hour work schedule. The final salary may vary depending on confirmed job-related skills and experience.

  • Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications should expect compensation toward the lower end of the range.
  • Candidates with qualifications and experience beyond the requirements of the role may be considered for compensation above the posted range.

Responsibilities:
Reasonable accommodation will be provided to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Serve as a senior technical and client-facing lead for commissioning and decarbonization projects in Massachusetts, clearly communicating SWA's capabilities, recommending practical paths forward, and aligning teams on decisions and next steps.
  • Lead project scoping, fee development, proposal writing, staffing plans, and go/no-go recommendations for commissioning and energy opportunities.
  • Manage scope, schedule, budget, resources, deliverables, and client expectations across multiple concurrent projects while maintaining technical quality and financial performance.
  • Lead new construction and existing building commissioning projects from design through occupancy and warranty, including review of the Owner's Project Requirements and Basis of Design; design and submittal reviews; commissioning plans and specifications; construction observations; functional performance testing; issue resolution; and final reporting.
  • Lead building and portfolio level existing building evaluations to provide recommendations that reduce operational carbon and improve indoor air quality, maintainability, and operational effectiveness.
  • Translate complex technical findings into concise, useful recommendations for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Support the growth and technical development of junior staff through mentorship, training, and collaborative project work.
  • Represent SWA through participation in industry groups, technical committees, professional associations, and external training or educational initiatives.

Who You Are:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical or other relevant engineering field or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience working with HVAC systems in large multi-family and/or commercial buildings.
  • Demonstrated experience with new construction commissioning, with responsibility for projects through both design and construction.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, equipment submittals, control diagrams, and trend data and make sound technical decisions.
  • Experience developing scopes, budgets, staffing plans, and proposals for consulting projects.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to manage scope, schedules, budgets, teams, deliverables, and client expectations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • Interest in field work and comfort working in construction and occupied-building environments.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and Microsoft Office.

What Will Set You Apart:

  • Experience with Massachusetts building and energy codes, utility programs, market participants, and project-delivery practices.
  • Experience with existing-building commissioning, energy audits, decarbonization studies, energy modeling, or measurement and verification.
  • Experience mentoring and training staff and reviewing technical work.
  • Experience building or expanding a service offering.
