Job Description & How to Apply Below
Crystallization Scientist | Engineering and Materials Sciences | Pharmaceuticals
Our client, a leading pharmaceutical company focused on discovering, developing, manufacturing, and commercializing therapeutic treatments, is currently seeking a Crystallization Scientist to join its Engineering and Materials Sciences team. This person will support small-molecule drug substance process development at the laboratory and bench scale, with a particular focus on developing API crystallization and particle-forming processes. This is a 1-year contract position with the potential to extend.
Responsibilities- Develop and optimize laboratory-scale crystallization processes for small-molecule APIs
- Support development of commercially viable particle-forming processes, including crystallization, isolation, drying, and size reduction
- Design and execute experiments to understand crystallization behavior, process parameters, and resulting API material properties
- Support particle engineering activities and evaluate the impact of process conditions on API solid form and particle characteristics
- Apply chemistry and chemical engineering fundamentals including kinetics, thermodynamics, and transport principles to process development
- Utilize analytical and process characterization techniques such as HPLC, GC, FTIR, Raman, FBRM, DSC, TGA, and XRPD
- Apply statistical Design of Experiments (DoE) and Quality by Design (QbD) principles to process development and optimization
- Support process scale-up and translation of laboratory findings toward manufacturing-relevant conditions
- Analyze experimental data, document results, and communicate findings and recommendations to project teams
- BS or MS degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related life science discipline and 2-5 years of pharmaceutical industry experience
- Hands-on experience with small-molecule API process development and crystallization
- Experience with crystallization development and related particle engineering operations
- Knowledge of API isolation, drying, size reduction, and/or other particle-forming operations
- Strong understanding of chemistry and chemical engineering fundamentals, including kinetics, thermodynamics, and transport phenomena
- Experience with relevant laboratory instrumentation such as HPLC, GC, FTIR, Raman, FBRM, DSC, TGA, and/or XRPD
- Experience with statistical Design of Experiments and QbD concepts
- Familiarity with process or physical-property modeling tools such as Aspen, Dynochem, MATLAB, or similar software preferred
