Position Overview

The Environment Artist will be responsible for modeling, texturing, and lighting compelling 3D environments and props for the wildly successful co‑op horror game Backrooms:
Escape Together.

Responsibilities
  • Escape Together. This role places a strong emphasis on the creation of procedural and modular environments, leveraging both artistic vision and technical implementation to breakdown common environments found in real‑life into a set of modular art pieces.
  • Create environment assets with lifelike realism optimized for Unreal Engine 5 real‑time performance (Nanite, Lumen, Virtual Shadow Maps, Hardware Ray tracing).
  • Break down real‑life liminal spaces into modular assets that can be constructed to create explorable in‑game environments.
  • Build modular kits, trim sheets, decals, and master materials designed for procedural placement and efficient world‑building.
  • Implement lighting and material setups that reinforce the game’s mood and tone.
  • Collaborate with design and technical teams to ensure environmental assets meet gameplay and performance requirements.
  • Participate in internal art reviews and provide constructive feedback to maintain consistency across the project.
  • Ensure all work aligns with the project’s established visual and technical guidelines.
Required Qualifications
  • 3+ years of professional experience as an Environment Artist in game development.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating realistic or atmospheric 3D environments, including examples of procedural generation or tool‑assisted world‑building.
  • Proficiency with Unreal Engine 5, Substance 3D Painter/Designer, Maya or Blender, and Photoshop.
  • Expertise in creating assets utilizing Nanite, Virtual Textures, and Hardware Ray tracing.
  • Experience with modular asset workflows and real‑time performance optimization.
  • Strong grasp of composition, lighting, scale, and color theory.
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
  • Passion for environmental storytelling and atmospheric world‑building.
Nice to Haves
  • Experience in horror or narrative‑driven games.
  • Proficiency in vertex painting, decals, and advanced material effects.
  • Interest in the aesthetics of liminal or psychologically driven spaces.
  • Experience with Unreal Engine’s PCG system.
Compensation and Benefits
  • $50–$75 USD per hour, commensurate with experience, skillset, and portfolio quality.
  • Flexible remote or hybrid work arrangements.
