Please NoteThis fellowship is open to applicants who are undergraduate students attending an institution of higher education located in Massachusetts or undergraduate students who reside in Massachusetts but attend an institution of higher education located in the United States but not in Massachusetts. Applicants with a demonstrated interest in promoting DEI&B in the financial services industry and students who can bring a unique and authentic perspective to Massachusetts State Retirement Board are especially encouraged to apply.
This 10‑week fellowship will go from June to August and will be in a hybrid in‑office format.
About Massachusetts State Retirement BoardThe Massachusetts State Retirement Board (MSRB) is a multi‑generational and diverse department within the Office of the State Treasurer which administers a defined benefit retirement plan for eligible employees of the Commonwealth and certain independent entities. Established in 1911 the MSRB supports more than 85,000 active members and more than 68,000 retirees & beneficiaries. The MSRB annually issues more than $2.75 billion in benefits.
PositionSummary
The MSRB is seeking a full‑time Finance Fellow to work with our Finance Unit. Exposure to this team will provide the successful candidate with an excellent opportunity to gain valuable business skills relevant to the operations of a state‑run agency with exposure to accounting, budgeting and financial transactions, as well as professional development opportunities.
Primary Responsibilities- Support the Finance team through various bookkeeping activities, transactional support, and other cash management duties
- Participate in efforts between internal units and external business partners for accounting related inquiries
- Assist the Finance team with preparations for the annual reporting cycle by generating reports, reconciling accounts and researching any discrepancies
Education and Background: Candidates must be currently pursuing an undergraduate/graduate degree in Business Administration or Finance
Knowledge and
Skills:
- Must be proficient with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
- Strong organizational skills and an ability to multitask are required as the incumbent will be forced to prioritize workflow to meet deadline‑driven projects in a fast‑paced environment
- Interpersonal skills are required as the incumbent will interact with various Board personnel at all levels, as well as external partners
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong attention to detail
- As the incumbent is exposed to confidential financial results, the applicant should have a high degree of integrity and professionalism
