Position: Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Tax Manager, State and Local Tax

Job Description

A State and Local Tax (SALT) Manager is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, recommending alternative courses of action, and identifying various methods of complying with tax regulations. In this role the SALT Manager will also engage in marketing, networking and business development within their area of expertise, recognize potential changes in tax policy, and apply new policies to tax compliance.

The SALT Manager will work with Core Tax Partners, Directors, and Senior Managers to provide SALT expertise to clients.

Job Summary

The SALT Manager will provide comprehensive state and local tax services, including research, compliance, consulting, and controversy work, while fostering client relationships and contributing to business development. The role requires collaboration with senior partners and direct supervision of junior tax staff.

Job Duties Research
  • Identify complex situations requiring research and outline the issue(s) and appropriate sources.
  • Analyze researched facts and sources prior to composing a detailed report of the findings.
  • Develop relationships with in‑state and out‑of‑state Department of Tax/Revenue personnel.
Tax Compliance
  • Conduct detailed reviews of tax returns to identify significant state tax issues.
  • Compose responses to notices from state taxing authorities.
  • Provide assistance with exam support.
Tax Consulting
  • Draft tax memorandums, opinions, and other documentation on various tax issues.
  • Apply applicable state tax consulting sub‑specialties and confer with other STS professionals when appropriate.
  • Determine tax planning processes.
  • Ensure tax engagement letters are adopted prior to engagement work and manage engagements.
  • Assist in developing consultative selling strategies.
  • Manage client expectations.
Tax Controversy
  • Represent clients before any tax authority on contested issues.
Tax Related Software
  • Utilize GoSystems, tax research databases, and other tax‑related software in task completion.
Tax Specialization
  • Provide technical client service to multi‑state companies with state and local tax issues.
  • Conduct negotiation of settlements, voluntary disclosure agreements, and state tax audit representation.
  • Draft technical memoranda regarding state and local tax issues.
Accounting for Income Taxes – SFAS
109
  • Prepare tax accrual work papers.

  • Understand and apply industry standards, firm policies, and BDO Tax Quality Manual requirements related to FAS 109, FIN
    48, FAS5 for sales tax and unclaimed properties.
Strategy Development
  • Review studies of tax implications to identify alternative courses of action benefit ting clients.
  • Develop new or improved ideas to advance client, firm, or personnel positions through tax reduction, cost savings, or non‑tax benefits.
  • Assist with researching potential tax strategies.
  • Suggest marketing approaches for new client acquisition.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervise day‑to‑day workload of STS SALT Senior Associates and Associates on assigned engagements and review work product.
  • Ensure associates and interns are trained on all relevant tax software.
  • Evaluate performance of associates and assist in developing goals and objectives for professional development.
  • Deliver periodic performance feedback and complete performance evaluations for associates and interns.
  • Act as career advisor to associates and associates, as appropriate.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree required; focus in business preferred.
  • Master’s degree in Accounting/Taxation or J.D. preferred.
Experience
  • Four (4) years of prior experience in state and local/multistate tax, legal professional services, or equivalent through an advanced degree program required.
  • Prior experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis required.
  • Prior experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions preferred.
  • Prior experience with corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships preferred.
License/Certifications
  • CPA certification or other relevant certification preferred.
Software
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word, required.
  • Exposure to and familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools preferred.
