Position: Commercial Credit Senior Associate - CRE (Hybrid - see description for potential work locations)

Work Arrangement

This is a hybrid position requiring four days/week of in‑office work. Ideally based in Boston, MA but may be based at an M&T corporate office in Danvers, MA or Belmont, MA.

Overview

The Commercial Credit Senior Associate plays a pivotal role in assessing and managing credit risk for commercial clients at M&T Bank. This client‑facing role serves as a critical link between relationship managers (RM) and credit risk management to facilitate sound lending decisions and portfolio management.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Focus on transaction execution and portfolio management; partner with senior team members on complex transactions/account coverage.
  • Underwrite new requests and material modifications from deal screen through approval and for the life of the loan, including recommending adding or removing conditions.
  • Manage ongoing credit risk of existing loan portfolios through continuous credit monitoring (CCM) activities to identify emerging credit risk and take appropriate actions.
  • Conduct annual reviews, interim updates, covenant monitoring, problem loan management, early warning indicators, and other credit surveillance activities.
  • Review all pertinent credit and financial information: financial statements, tax returns, due diligence reports, credit bureaus, appraisals, internal credit information, industry research, and peer data.
  • Determine need for further investigation or additional information and coordinate gathering.
  • Analyze financial information, complete credit analyses for commercial transactions, and produce written analyses including risk rating, credit risks, mitigants, industry concerns, market trends, and financial trends.
  • Make structure recommendations based on scenario analysis (company case, bank base case, downside case).
  • Identify suspicious activity or actions contrary to the customer's interest, and partner with relationship managers throughout the deal process to maintain timely and accurate risk ratings.
  • Prepare financial statements, models, cash flow schedules, collateral schedules, covenant sensitivity calculations, and guarantor statement analysis.
  • Attend client/prospect calls with RMs to gain understanding of the client’s business and underwrite the transaction.
  • Recommend risk rating based on underwriting parameters, present findings, and offer opinions concerning creditworthiness.
  • Assist in structuring loan requests, suggesting terms, conditions, collateral, and guarantors.
  • Ensure compliance with Commercial Credit Policy and regulatory standards, and address non‑compliance risks.
  • Present analysis or answer questions during credit request discussions or committee presentations.
  • Escalate risk‑related issues to management when necessary.
  • Maintain internal control standards and support audit and regulator requirements.
  • Complete other related duties as assigned.
Scope of Responsibilities
  • Responsible for credit delivery throughout the credit lifecycle, from initial analyses to ongoing monitoring and restructuring.
  • Ensure accurate completion of risk rating scorecards and financial statement spreads.
  • Interact with commercial banking relationship managers across the bank’s footprint and industry verticals.
  • Lead transaction execution team in partnership with a Commercial Credit Analyst.
  • Customer interaction is expected; works independently with limited supervision.
Supervisory/Managerial Responsibilities

Input into development and training of junior analysts.

Education and Experience Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related field and five years’ experience in commercial credit, public accounting, financial statement preparation/analysis, or related financial analysis.
  • Alternatively, a combined minimum of nine years’ higher education and work experience, including five years’ commercial credit experience.
  • Strong analytical skills with proficiency in financial modeling and credit metrics analysis.
  • Ability to calculate and interpret financial ratios, analyze data, and perform trend analysis.
  • Experience with commercial credit is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
