Overview
The Actuarial Internship is a 11‑week program from June 1 to August 14 2026, designed for students interested in an actuarial career. Interns work on challenging projects within the actuarial and analytics teams and participate in BCBSMA’s Actuarial Leadership Development Program.
What you’ll doSample Project Work (Recent Past Years):
- Research and develop drug utilization trend reports at the therapeutic class level for the Medicare population.
- Analyze the profitability and competitiveness of market segments by geographic region to build new area factor recommendations for rate setting.
- Develop models to calculate rebate liability exposure for current and future years for the Merged Market and Medicare Advantage lines of business.
- Determine the magnitude and drivers of behavioral health claims in light of COVID‑19 and increased telehealth usage.
- Explore patterns in members with large claims and model the financial impact of members entering the federal High Cost Risk Pool.
- Evaluate the benefit buydown calculation used in medical expense reporting, trend projections, and benefit change pricing factors used by multiple business areas.
- Create a model to identify members with major chronic conditions to support plan and account analytics.
- Update and enhance the best‑in‑class efficiency score reporting process.
- Student currently pursuing coursework in Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Economics, Business, Finance, or a related path – required.
- Demonstrated interest and aptitude in a math, analytics, or actuarial career path.
- Past work or leadership experience preferred (includes on‑campus, volunteer, internships, and other work).
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team – required.
- Ability to present information in an easy‑to‑understand format, both written and verbal.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint – required.
- Experience with data visualization and/or coding languages (SAS, SQL, R, Python, Tableau, etc.) – a plus.
- Ability to work in the U.S. without sponsorship now and in the future – required.
- High school degree or equivalent – required unless otherwise noted.
