Financial Reporting, Financial Controller, Accounting Manager
Our client, a well‑established construction company, is looking for an Assistant Controller to join their team! This is a hands‑on role partnering directly with the President and controller on the accounting close while serving as a key contributor on project finance. You’ll sit on a small, collaborative accounting team where your work is visible and your contributions genuinely matter — no getting lost in a giant department here.
The role is weighted toward operational accounting and project finance with meaningful FP&A elements layered in, and it offers a clear path to grow within the finance organization over time, including the opportunity to take on broader controllership responsibilities as the team evolves. This is perfect for an Accounting Manager in a construction or project‑based industry looking to step up, or an experienced Assistant Controller ready to take ownership of project finance at a respected, stable organization.
Overview
The Assistant Controller is a key member of the accounting team, partnering closely with the Controller and the President of the org to manage the close and ensure the accuracy and reliability of financial information across active projects. This position leads work‑in‑process reporting and percentage‑of‑completion accounting, drives job‑cost and project finance analysis, and contributes forecasting and variance work to support better decision‑making.
The ideal candidate is hands‑on, detail‑oriented, and thrives in a collaborative, fast‑moving environment — someone who enjoys both the technical accounting and the operational partnership with project teams.
- Partner closely with the Controller on the monthly, quarterly, and annual close — journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
- Lead work‑in‑process (WIP) reporting and percentage‑of‑completion accounting across active projects.
- Drive project finance: job‑cost accounting, budget‑versus‑actual tracking, and margin analysis in close partnership with project managers.
- Contribute FP&A elements — project‑level forecasting, variance analysis, and cash‑flow projections — to support decision‑making.
- Serve as a power user and administrator of the company’s ERP and its integrated project and field systems, helping the business get full value from its technology.
- Lead special projects and process‑improvement initiatives across the accounting function.
- Participate in technology and AI initiatives — helping evaluate tools, identify use cases, and move the finance function forward.
- Collaborate closely with and support a small, tight‑knit accounting team.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in construction or another project‑based industry. Public accounting experience will be considered if the audit experience includes construction.
- Strong knowledge of WIP / percentage‑of‑completion accounting and job costing.
- A hands‑on, collaborative approach to the close, with solid technical accounting skills.
- Experience with a construction or project‑based ERP strongly preferred; familiarity with integrated project‑management and field/equipment systems is a plus.
- Some FP&A or forecasting exposure, with an interest in growing the analytical side of the role.
- A curiosity for process improvement and technology adoption, including emerging AI tools.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA a plus.
- Ability to work on‑site at the company’s HQ in Boston – note this is on‑site but flexible for family obligations and childcare pickup etc.
