The Nonprofit Tax Manager is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex non‑profit tax issues. In this role, the manager applies knowledge to understand potential tax disclosure, exemption and unrelated business income issues, communicates potential risks and changes in tax policy, and makes top‑level decisions regarding filing, preparation and resolution of questions from federal and state agencies.
The role also involves marketing and networking within the specialized area and maintaining client relationships as the primary contact for complex questions.
- Ensure clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and ensure self and client service teams comply with all firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual ("TQM")
- Conduct reviews of tax returns and resolve all tax issues with clients; involve specialists when appropriate
- Plan for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consult with client or partner as appropriate
- Review ASC 740‑10 (Uncertain Tax Positions) work papers and disclosure for audited financial statements
- Plan and review the tax process and procedures, including budgeting and staffing, monitoring engagement process and time versus budget, timely billing and collection of accounts receivable, client relationship management, and providing timely advice to clients
- Identify when research is needed; clearly frame issues to be researched and report the analysis concisely
- Apply firm and professional standards for preparation of written tax advice (WTA) and tax returns
- Involve firm specialists as appropriate
- Assist with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing current and future taxes
- Apply combined tax knowledge and industry/business knowledge to recommend solutions
- Develop and implement work plans to organize support for ongoing client projects
- Frame projects for effective delegation to seniors and associates, serve as a technical resource within the region, and manage inquiries from federal and state agencies with little or no assistance
- Introduce and develop new or improved ideas to benefit clients, the firm, or firm personnel, e.g., by reducing taxes or expenses or providing nonprofit tax benefits
- Review studies of tax implications and offer clients alternative actions; research and implement nonprofit tax strategies, including promising new strategies and ideas
- Leverage lessons learned from prior projects and provide input on process improvement
- Supervise associates and senior associates on all projects
- Review work prepared by associates and senior associates and provide review comments
- Train associates and seniors on current software tools
- Act as a career advisor to associates and senior associates
- Schedule and manage workload of associates and senior associates
- Provide verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associates
Skills and Abilities
Education
- Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics preferred
- Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred
- Five (5) or more years of nonprofit tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience required
- Prior supervisory experience required
- CPA certification, attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent ("EA") (or equivalent) required
- Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred
- Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite preferred
- Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred
- Superior verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to effectively delegate work as needed
- Strong analytical, research and critical thinking skills as well as decision‑making skills
- Capacity to work well in a team environment
- Capable of developing and managing a team of tax professionals
- Ability to compose written tax advice
- Capable of effectively developing and maintaining client relationships
- Executive presence and ability to act as primary client contact for preparation and presentation of issues and resolutions to clients
- Illinois: $105,000 - $130,000
- Minnesota: $90,000 - $120,000
- Maryland: $105,000 - $125,000
- NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $110,000 - $150,000
