The Opportunity

The SVP, Underwriter – Life Sciences will be a key contributor to the Venture Banking originations team with responsibilities that include providing financial, credit and trend analysis for venture lending opportunities to early‑stage private and public companies in the healthcare & life‑sciences industry. The position covers biotechnology, medical devices, healthcare services, specialty pharmaceuticals and digital health.

How You'll Make a Difference
  • Independently lead the underwriting of Life Sciences credit opportunities, interacting with customers to assess risks and mitigants.
  • Source, compile and interpret financial data to support loan structuring and approval.
  • Develop comprehensive multi‑year financial models and perform sensitivity, downside and break‑even analyses.
  • Partner with company CFOs and VCs to refine projections and evaluate assumptions.
  • Analyze complex corporate structures and recommend optimal loan and collateral structures.
  • Collaborate with Relationship Managers to structure transactions and draft key deal terms, including negotiating loan documents.
  • Prepare detailed credit memos that articulate transaction rationale, risks and mitigants.
  • Lead underwriting due diligence, coordinating with internal partners and reviewing third‑party reports.
  • Prepare and review Expressions of Interest and term sheets to ensure alignment with underwriting analysis.
  • Engage with clients during the underwriting process, including client calls to assess business models, management teams and strategy.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior Underwriters on complex underwriting assignments.
  • Ensure all underwriting activities comply with regulations, credit policies and internal procedures.
  • Support transaction execution by partnering with internal teams and ensuring accurate final documentation.
  • Follow all established policies and procedures.
What You'll Bring
  • 10+ years of life sciences banking experience.
  • Strong knowledge of state and federal regulations relevant to underwriting.
  • Strong working knowledge of the Bank’s loan policies and standards.
  • Deep understanding of complex loan documentation and collateral perfection.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Exceptional oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to make decisions with moderate impact on the work unit.
  • Strong analytical and financial calculation skills.
  • Ability to explain financial concepts clearly to customers and colleagues.
  • Strong presentation skills, both informal and formal.
  • Capability to tackle complex problems in non‑standardized situations.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
