Director of Finance And Accounting

Our client is seeking a highly motivated and hands-on Director, Finance & Accounting to lead the day-to-day finance and accounting activities of a small and growing, global biotech. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this individual will serve as a key financial partner to the organization, overseeing core accounting operations while supporting financial planning, analysis, and strategic decision-making.

The successful candidate will be equally comfortable managing the monthly close, overseeing AP, payroll, and external vendors, developing financial forecasts, and partnering with business leaders to provide actionable financial insights.

The role will support our global operations and will play an important role in continuing to build scalable financial processes and infrastructure as the company grows.

This position is based in Boston, Massachusetts, with an expectation of working in the office for a minimum of two days per week. Flexibility to work across global time zones is required.

Accounting & Financial Operations

• Lead and oversee the Company's day-to-day accounting activities, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant financial reporting.
• Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, including review of journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and financial statements.
• Oversee accounts payable and vendor payment processes, ensuring appropriate controls, approvals, and timely payments.
• Oversee payroll administration in a PEO environment and related accounting activities, partnering with internal stakeholders and external payroll providers to ensure accurate and timely processing.
• Coordinate accounting and financial activities related to global entities including oversight of local service providers and consolidation of financial results.
• Manage relationships with external accounting, tax, payroll, insurance, and other finance-related vendors and service providers.
• Support annual financial statement audits and tax compliance activities in partnership with external advisors.
• Maintain and enhance accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls appropriate for a growing biotechnology company.
• Identify opportunities to streamline, automate, and scale financial processes and systems.
• Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP and applicable financial and regulatory requirements.
• Support the annual budgeting and periodic forecasting processes, partnering with functional leaders to develop and maintain operating plans.
• Prepare and maintain financial forecasts, cash projections, and budget-to-actual analyses.
• Monitor operating expenses, headcount, and external spend and proactively identify financial trends, risks, and opportunities.
• Develop clear and actionable financial reporting and analyses for senior leadership.
• Partner with scientific, clinical, and corporate functions to understand key business drivers and support informed financial decision-making.
• Support scenario planning and financial modeling.
• Contribute to the continued development of financial metrics, dashboards, and management reporting.
• Support special projects and other finance initiatives as needed.

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
• CPA highly desired.
• Approximately 10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, with a combination of public accounting and industry experience strongly preferred.
• Prior experience in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or life sciences industry strongly preferred.
• Strong technical accounting foundation and demonstrated knowledge of U.S. GAAP.
• Experience leading monthly and annual close processes and overseeing core accounting operations.
• Demonstrated experience with budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, and budget-to-actual analysis.
• Experience managing external vendors and outsourced accounting or finance service providers.
• Experience supporting international subsidiaries or global operations is preferred.
• Experience in a venture-backed, privately held company environment is highly desirable.
• Strong systems aptitude and advanced proficiency with financial systems and Microsoft Excel.
