Position Title:
Sergeant (Campus Police Officer III) – Public Safety Department – Bunker Hill Community College
Location:
Boston, MA
- Supervise, including planning and assigning work according to job requirements.
- In-depth knowledge of police procedures, crime scene operations, fire prevention methods, and fire hazards.
- Plan, schedule and run departmental trainings, including MPTC approved in-service and required trainings; develop lesson plans that meet training objectives of the department and the college in accordance with MPTC and POST commission.
- Maintain all training records for all department personnel.
- Oversee a field training program for newly hired officers.
- Conduct daily roll calls, inspect the daily log, personnel, cruisers and equipment, and address any issues, situations or complaints.
- Motivate subordinates, determine the need for disciplinary action and make referrals.
- Maintain student discipline.
- Walk long hours alone, indoors and out, under varying climate conditions.
- Exercise sound judgment; maintain a calm manner in stressful situations; make decisions and act quickly in emergency/dangerous situations.
- Ensure calls for service are handled promptly and efficiently; personally handle calls if backlogged.
- Provide effective oral and written instructions; prepare written reports of investigation; maintain accurate records.
- Review reports and provide necessary feedback to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Apprehend lawbreakers and follow cases through to prosecution.
- Work harmoniously with college staff, students and the public.
- Assist the department Staff Associate with scheduling details.
- Execute the RAVE emergency alerts when necessary under stressful conditions.
- Maintain a working knowledge of Clery Compliance.
- Serve as backup Court Officer and liaison with other law enforcement agencies.
- Serve as department representative and participate actively as part of the Emergency Management of the department.
- Actively participate in the Accreditation process to include policy review and implementation.
- Provide feedback to the Captain and Deputy Chief regarding officers under command.
- Pass a check conducted by the Criminal History Systems Board (CORI check).
- Have working knowledge of the law of arrest and criminal procedure in lower courts.
- Have working knowledge of the rules and regulations pertaining to the buildings and grounds of a state educational institution.
- Perform duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Completed an approved Police Academy and eligible to be appointed as a Special State Police Officer; achieved and maintain POST Certification.
- Possession of a current, valid operator's license.
- CPR/First-Aid/AED Certified or ability to become certified.
- At least three years of full-time (or equivalent part-time) experience in a governmental police force or law‑enforcement work, with at least one year in a supervisory capacity (experience as a Field Training Officer or OIC will be considered).
- Or any equivalent combination of required experience and substitutions below.
- An Associate's degree in police science, law enforcement or criminal justice may substitute for a maximum of one year of required experience.
- A Bachelor's degree or higher in police science, law enforcement or criminal justice may substitute for a maximum of two years of required experience.
- Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of requirements actually completed.
- Certified MPTC Instructor in at least one major discipline (e.g., firearms, DT, Active Shooter, CPR, etc.).
- Experience in a higher education environment.
- Bachelor's degree or higher with a major in police science, law enforcement or criminal justice.
Salary: $83,513.30 - $96,032.30 (Grade 19 Step 8 - Step 14)
