Police Sergeant

Location:

Statewide, MA

• Perform duties of a Police Sergeant under supervision in conformance with department rules and regulations.
• Perform all duties assigned by a higher rank up to the Chief of Police in every phase of police work.
• Perform related work as required.

• Permanent civil service status in a qualifying title within a Massachusetts police department.
• At least one year of service as a police officer since appointment, counting both temporary and permanent service.
• Knowledge of U.S. and Massachusetts Constitutional law, Massachusetts General Laws, federal, state and local rules and regulations, local ordinances and relevant court decisions that govern police work.
• Knowledge of appropriate police goals, objectives, methods, procedures and techniques for major police functions (traffic control, criminal investigation, hostage situations, juvenile investigation, etc.).
• Knowledge of community policing principles, practices and techniques (patrol, community relations, neighborhood and community policing, etc.).
• Knowledge of police supervision principles, practices and techniques (planning, organizing, staffing, directing, controlling, training, performance evaluation, communication, job stress, psychological aspects, motivation, etc.).
• Ability to choose actions appropriate to the situation, confront problems, take charge, assume responsibility, demonstrate administrative judgment, and coordinate others toward assigned objectives.
• Completion of the 2026 Statewide Police Sergeant Promotional Examination E & E Claim application.
