2026 Statewide Departmental Promotional Examination for Deputy Fire Chief (1YP)
Location:
Statewide, MA. Permanent Full-Time.
To be eligible for this examination you must: (1) be an employee in the fire department for which the examination is given with permanent civil service status in the specified eligible title(s) by the date of the examination; and (2) have served in the force at least one year since you were appointed and performed the job duties of the eligible title(s).
A combination of temporary and permanent service from a certification can be applied toward meeting this one-year requirement. Time spent working in the title of Deputy Fire Chief will not interrupt the service period in your permanent position.

- Direct operations of the fire department under general supervision of appointing authority, exercising supervision over direct reporting staff and overseeing delivery of major municipal fire services.
- Conduct long-range planning to determine policies, program priorities, and utilization of resources to ensure efficient and effective implementation of goals and objectives mandated by state laws, local bylaws, ordinances, and departmental rules.
- Evaluate availability of fiscal and equipment resources, personnel, and local needs relative to life, property protection, and fire prevention/suppression.
- Direct and perform fire prevention duties including code and pre-fire inspection duties.
- Direct, perform, and report results of fire investigations.
- Personally respond to fire and non-fire emergencies to supervise actions of fire service personnel.
- Carry out public relations activities, prepare and disseminate news releases.
- Plan and conduct hearings and meetings on issues of public concern.
- Prepare and submit budget requests; administer department budget.
- Interview and select personnel for promotion; review and negotiate contract proposals from contractors and/or vendors.
- Perform related duties as required.
Knowledge of the chemistry and physics of fire, fire ground operations/fire suppression, special operations, building design, construction, and materials, fire prevention, fire protection, fire cause determination, hazardous materials, legal considerations, supervision, and administration and management.
Examination Subjects – Situational Judgement Test (SJT)Measure judgment and decision-making, accountability, adaptability, guiding and developing others, leadership, and interpersonal skills, including conflict management.
Experience, Certification/Training & Education (ECT&E)All candidates must complete the ECT&E Claim application online.
Statutory Preference PointsUpon submission of written proof, two points will be added to the passing score for qualified Veterans and Disabled Veterans or individuals who have 25 years of service in a regular municipal fire force and have passed an examination for promotional appointment.
