ICU Technician 36 Hours (Nights)
Boston Medical Center (BMC)
36 hours per week, 7pm to 7:30am, with every third weekend required.
Job SummaryThe ICU Technician functions under the direction of the Nurse Manager or Charge RN, providing direct patient care to acute patients, supporting the physical environment, maintaining supplies and equipment, and delivering high customer service.
Qualifications- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- At least one year of related technical experience (ICU technician, EMT, ED technician, or nursing assistant).
- Phlebotomy experience preferred. >
- BLS certified.
- CPI training.
EMT or Nursing Aide certification highly preferred.
- Effective verbal and written English communication.
- Mathematical ability to perform required computations.
- Ability to analyze simple issues and resolve them with direction.
- Perform hourly rounding and respond to nurse call lights.
- Prepare ICU rooms for admission, ensuring equipment readiness.
- Admit patients to monitors and set up telemetry, oximetry, BP monitoring under nurse direction.
- Collect, record, and communicate patient clinical data promptly.
- Transport or accompany patients to other areas of the hospital safely.
- Provide comfort care (positioning, linen changes, toileting, enema, etc.).
- Assist with computer entry of vitals, intake/output, and documentation.
- Communicate changes in patient status to assigned nurse or Charge RN immediately.
- Maintain patient and family confidentiality at all times.
- Set up procedural equipment as requested by nursing/medical staff.
- Participate in crisis intervention using CPI techniques.
- Clean or discard used equipment and supplies.
- Set up oxygen supplies (masks, cannulas, etc.) under nurse direction.
- Respond productively in emergency situations; provide basic life support as needed.
- Perform phlebotomy on selected patients 15+ with aseptic technique.
- Prepare specimens for lab, perform point-of-care testing, and conduct 12‑lead EKG.
- Label, store, and transmit test results properly.
- Set up and prime tubing for intravenous lines without medications.
- Account for and care for patient belongings.
- Maintain standard precautions during specimen collection.
- Respond to patient/family requests promptly, seeking nurse supervision when required.
- Assist with procedures as directed, using proper body mechanics.
- Observe and report any patient safety concerns to the Nurse Manager or Charge RN.
- Apply age‑appropriate care knowledge to all patients.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Stock rooms, carts, cabinets with supplies; maintain clean work environment.
- Understand normal values for vital signs and O₂ saturation; notify RN of abnormalities.
- Know normal and abnormal blood glucose levels and report findings.
- Work collaboratively to support patient outcomes and a positive unit environment.
- Demonstrate self‑direction and teamwork.
- Use time constructively, meet demands during stress or emergencies.
- Assume responsibility and accept constructive criticism to improve performance.
- Maintain a professional appearance and attitude.
- Manage conflict constructively.
