Inpatient Clinical Dietitian (Registered Dietitian). Department:
Nutrition Clinical.
Schedule:
Full Time.
Assesses and coordinates medical nutrition therapy and nutrition education activities for patients. Plans and provides nutritional care by interpreting and adapting physician-prescribed diets and nutrition support interventions to individual needs. Responsible for creating diet regimens and educating individuals on maintaining proper dietary standards. Evaluates patient responses to diet therapy through direct interview, calculating nutrient intake and lab values, and monitoring tolerance of foods, tube feedings, and/or parenteral nutrition.
The work may vary based on assigned patient population or department.
- Provide nutritional care to hospitalized patients; review MD prescriptions for feedings; interview patients to obtain nutrition history; assess nutritional status based on laboratory values, medical history, and condition; develop nutritional care plans in accordance with AND standards of practice and department protocols. Document in the EHR using the nutrition care process; consult with physicians regarding changes in diet orders or enteral regimens;
plan diet therapy including supplements and tube feedings; maintain records of patients seen and referrals for follow-up nutritional care. - Monitor nutritional status (weights, labs); assess adequacy of intake from food, tube feeding, or parenteral solutions; recommend supplements or tube feedings; monitor tube feeding tolerance and assist in adjusting regimens; perform nutritional support assessments as assigned; document all data in the EHR per policy.
- Assess nutritional status and develop care plans; manage malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies; perform Nutrition Focused Physical Exams (NFPE) as able; consult with physicians regarding GI-related interventions; collaborate with team for patient care and discharge planning.
- Instruct patients and families, individually and in groups, on diet therapy after hospitalization, including nutrition principles, diet purposes, food selection and preparation, and adapting plans to individual needs.
- Participate in multidisciplinary discharge planning and daily rounds; discuss dietary requirements and continuity of care for critically ill patients; collaborate with nutrition support dietitians as needed.
- Provide education in nutrition to hospital personnel; develop educational materials for individuals and groups; act as a preceptor for dietetic interns and medical staff.
- Provide nutritional care for malnourished and/or critically ill patients; diagnose malnutrition; document in the EHR using approved criteria; use NFPE to assess status; plan nutrition care and transitions (TPN/tube feeding to regular diet) with physician approval and documentation in records.
- May cover other specialty areas (e.g., NICU, pediatrics) as needed; adhere to hospital infection control and safety procedures.
- Bachelor’s degree required in Nutrition or related discipline;
Master’s degree preferred but not required. - Must have completed an approved dietetic internship or comparable alternative through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND); must be credentialed as a Registered Dietitian (RD) through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) and maintain registration status.
- Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist (LDN) by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Division of Professional Licensure required by the department; LDN preferred.
- Additional advanced board certifications preferred for complex patient populations (e.g., CNSC, CLC, CSPCC, CSP, CSOWM, CDE) or other certifications.
- Experience:
Must have completed AND-approved internship or equivalent.
- General clinical understanding of metabolism and clinical nutrition; knowledge of food composition.
- Strong interpersonal skills to explain care and interact with physicians, nurses, and other staff.
- Analytical skills to interpret laboratory data and plan nutrition therapy; assess and adjust care plans and outcomes.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment; basic computer proficiency to access and enter data in the EHR.
- Competence to provide nutrition support to assigned population.
Compensation Range: $33.36 - $42.52 per hour. This range reflects minimum qualifications; offers consider education, experience, licensure, and certifications. Benefits and total compensation include medical/dental/vision, retirement plans, paid time off, and wellbeing resources. Works occasional holidays and rotating weekends.
