Overview
The Outpatient Dietitian assesses, develops, and coordinates medical nutrition therapy and education activities for patients with complex nutritional needs in the treatment of chronic disease, including but not limited to weight management, diabetes, heart disease, allergies, GI disorders, and malnutrition. The dietitian plans and provides nutritional care to patients per department policies and procedures by evaluating patient status and need, and adapting dietary interventions to individual patient needs, taking into account nutritional status, environmental or social barriers, and cultural diversity, utilizing appropriate and proven counseling modalities.
The dietitian evaluates and assesses patient compliance and physiological response to diet therapy through direct interview, lab values, monitoring tolerance of foods or tube feedings, and actively coordinates with other providers in development and implementation of patient care plans. The Outpatient Dietitian plays a key role in creating and managing complex dietary regimens and protocols within the department and in developing nutrition-based programming, mentorship, and education of peers, staff, and students, demonstrating a consistent high level of competency.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills

- Clinical Knowledge & Skills
- Strong knowledge of food and nutrition; perform nutrition assessment, formulate plans, and provide counseling and education to adults on a referral basis with follow-up as needed
- Assess nutritional status based on laboratory values, medical history, and condition; develop care plans in accordance with accepted standards and department protocols
- Provide nutrition education and engage patients in behavior modification in individual and group settings
- Maintain records and provide periodic reports to referring and other care providers as needed
- Deliver MNT appropriate for a variety of chronic diseases; develop competency in diverse dietary interventions
- Attend clinical meetings, rounds, or committees to present nutrition care plans as needed
- Develop and plan individual diets including medical food supplements and/or tube feedings; monitor tolerance and assist with adjustments as appropriate
- Assist in patient and clinician outreach through lectures, community events, and other marketing opportunities; assist in orientations and support groups as requested
- Leadership
- Provide in-service nutrition education to hospital personnel (MDs, residents, students, nurses, dietary staff) as requested
- Act as a preceptor for dietetic interns and medical students; supervise practical experiences and develop learning activities
- Assist with interviewing new prospective dietitians and participate in onboarding processes as needed
- Program Development / Research
- Compile and develop educational materials for individual and group classes
- Collaborate on policies, procedures, CQI monitors, guidelines, and standards of care; monitor patient retention and coordinate work for productivity
- Participate in department clinical research related to nutrition care, providing education and monitoring as requested
- Develop strategies to grow the clinic; collaborate with Nutrition Manager and Operations Managers to implement nutrition programs
